So we're sitting near the pier waiting for our boat to arrive, wasting a bit of time. We're heading to Krabi, the planned trip to "The Beach" to stay for the night on Monday was put off as the weather here is very unpredictable at this time of year, but we did get to go there on our boat trip.
Our plans to head out on a half day sunset snorkeling trip were brought to an abrupt halt when we opened our bungalow door to find ourselves in the middle of a tropical storm. So out came the rain jackets and we headed down to the little office where we'd book our tickets to see if we could change our trip until tomorrow, the ticket said "NO REFUNDS" but suprisingly the nice Thai lady agreed to put us on the boat tomorrow. We spent the remainder of the day playing Cards, Connect 4, Chess and reading our books under the canopies before having a few jars a generally chilling out. In a bizzare rule they have hear acohol sale was not permitted after 6pm, due to it being an election the next day, apparently the Thai goverment don't want people
fogetting to vote due to their hangovers, luckily we heard about this and stocked up earlier in the day, but we did enjoy winding people up about it as they were heading out for a night on the town, with no idea of the alcohol ban!
Hels went to bed early so Benji took me to a little place he'd found which he called "The Ultimate Swimming Pool". Not suprisingly it was in some top resort so we snuck in under the cover of dark and had a cheeky swim at their expense. Thankfully their were some Norwegians having a big row in the corridors, which had distracted everyones attention away from the two English blokes in the pool in the middle of the night... There's only one thing people hate more than English people mucking about in their pool at night - loud screaming Scandinavians.
The following morning the sun was shining so it was off out on the long tail boats to a few of the scenic spots around Phi Phi. It seems everyone had the same idea as us and there were loads of boats out that day, which kind of made the experience a
Too Many Farang!
Can't see the monkeys through the monkeys! bit too touristy. We paid a visit to Ko Phi Phi Leh, home of Monkey Beach, Phi Phi Bay and Maya Bay (from the movie "The Beach"). To gain access to Maya Bay we were dropped round the rear of the island and hand to clamber through caves using ropes, all while the waves were rushing in and out... sadly this meant no cameras, especially in my case! After a small treck we arrived in Maya Bay to find the wind howling and whipping up quite a sand storm we made a dash for the sea, screaming "It wasn't like this in the movies!" It was all very beautiful though, and after the return treck we headed back towards Phi Phi for some serious snorkeling.
Our "Captain", who i nicknamed Hello, as that was all the English he could speak, was a bit of wildcard to say the least; he seemed to find it impossible to take the same route as the other long tails, and ended up taking us way too far out to sea, with giant waves crashing all over our tiny boat, it started to get a bit hairy. Luckily, he finally got us to the
safety of a quiet beach for some lunch, when he produced his bamboo bong and started to light up i think we all realised why his judgement was a little clouded!
We went to a great coral reef for some of the best snorkeling i've done since being in Thailand, we saw some amazing fish and these little things called Clown Flowers which open and close when you wave at them. The waves were picking up again and the clouds were looking ominous so we all agreed that Hello should take us back to the pier before he got us all killed out on the open sea. Sadly there was no sunset as it was too cloudy.
It was Benji's last night, he's now moved on to Bangkok and then north to Chang Mai, it's been great to hook up over here and we hope to do the same in Vietnam and Oz. Hels and I headed up to "The Viewpoint" where you can see for miles, and finally got to watch the beautiful sunset together, it was worth the treck.
Phi Phi is very beautiful, and the weather, bar one day has been good to us,
Maya Bay
Not my photo, obviously! but again we feel it's time to move on, nowhere in Thailand has yet to grab us and keep us there for longer than a couple of weeks, but who knows what's to come. We're just about to jump on the boat to Krabi, and after an overnight stay we will be heading to the
Khao Sok National Park for some trecking, rafting and wild animal watching.
Thanks to everyone who is checking into our blog, please post us some comments we'd love to hear from more of you!
