How many in a cart?!
Joyriding around the neighborhood... When people get together with a mission a lot can get done. In the span of a few hours this afternoon, we managed to get all the medicines in the orphanage labeled and ordered in both English and Thai, new supplies ordered and all the donations sorted and put away.
With the help from one of the Life After Wave sponsors, we purchased new cabinets and locking drawers to house all the new materials. First Aid here is a big deal, one that needs addressing and our friends have contacts with a Burmese nurse who works at the Takua Pa clinic with Doctors Without Borders. She is arranging for some first Aid training to be done at the orphanage and Rotjana has appointed one staff member to be in charge of First Aid.
An fell sick this afternoon and her fever raged so high we actually had to soak her in icy water to bring down her temperature fast enough. With time, Paracetamol and lots to drink we got it under control. She has the mumps and a high fever. I made Rotjana take her to the hospital for medicine today. There isn’t enough to share with the other
four kids currently taking it. An crashed pretty good mid afternoon and refused to leave Britt or my lap for the remainder. She was so hot though, there were times I was pretty worried.
The dentists came by today to check on the orphanage kids, An and Sa missed out because of their illnesses. Most all of the dek lek’s (little ones) have rotten or rotting baby teeth. Mostly from the utter lack of dental hygiene than from the endless sweets. The orphanage has started a regular dental plan now however, and at least there is regular brushing going on. The dentist made a few referrals for the older kids, but not much for the youngers.
Sa is a bit better today, cheeky as usual which is good. She has had a few good doses of antifungal medicine and is slathered in my antifungal ointment. Her wounds look much better but the infected part on her arm is no better at all. I lanced it again with the help of Tara (volunteer from Life After Wave) and we got her washed thoroughly in antibiotic soap again. Hopefully we’ll see some improvement in that arm by tomorrow.

Champ in a ladies hat....
sometimes I just don't know about him...yesterday he wore a bathrobe around all day.... loaded up the bicycles into the side cart today and hauled off the damaged missing pieces and the frames to the bike repair shop today. Three bikes plus a new one came back this afternoon at 5pm and the kids had a heyday! Even little Sa felt well enough to try a ride!
The girls also finally got to perform a dance in full costume this evening. The dentists all enjoyed dinner and a show by the older girls. I stayed back with the younger ones and all the sick kids so I wasn’t able to snap any dance pics, but there are a few great prep pictures! I heard they did really well and this was Jing Jang’s first full performance!
We’ve had some crazy weird weather at night lately. Hot and humid with mist. It gets foggy and then threatens to rain but only lets the mist down from the clouds. It’s eerie. The kids love the cool as they all share cramped and airless dorm rooms and have one fan per room to keep them cool at night. It’s a miracle some of them don’t overheat, but I guess they are more used to it
that the farungs!.
I certainly don’t need air conditioning, but 35 degrees is too much for me without a fan! The little kids have it a bit better off as they sleep in the hallway and have a cross breeze at least.
So, I am feeling a bit better. I have more energy today than I have in over a week. The fever and weakness seems to be gone almost entirely, just the lethargy and fatigue is hanging on a bit. It didn’t rain today, so the sudden drop in barometric pressure wasn’t available to put me to sleep for a nap. Good thing too as we got so much done today!
Hopefully tomorrow I won’t have the same arguments with Miles and Marring about school work. They are both being pretty picky about the food lately as well. I hae cut off the treats as it is too easy for them to just wait until after the meal they don’t want to try and go get noodles later in the day. They now are expected to eat with the other kids properly. Eat what is given to them and then there may be snacks. They don’t
Sitting pretty
Om waiting for her turn for make up and hair get offered the spicy food and I won’t make them eat the things we don’t in Canada, but they are expected to at least try to eat with the kids.
Miles is not happy I am being strict, but he needs it especially. We’ll see how long he can go without noodles and fish chips….he might start eating the orphanage food after all. He did miss out on ice cream this afternoon!
