It was time to leave Phi Phi for Ao Nang. We packed our stuff and headed for the boat which took us to Krabi Port. We took a bus into Krabi town which dropped us off at some random guest house and we were off to find a way to Ao Nang. We were about to head to the main bus station, which was about a 7 km walk, when some random Aussie woman on a scooter informed us of where we needed to go to catch a ride to Ao Nang. We automatically trusted her because she didn’t seem local. The cheapest and most efficient way of getting to Ao Nang from where we were was to take a Songthaew(a pick-up truck with benches on either side of the box) for 50 Baht each. Sounded good to us!
We saw a bunch of cheapy guest houses and hotels as soon as we entered Ao Nang but we decided to stay in the vehicle till we reached the last stop in town. We ended up walking all the way back to where we first entered town just because we couldn’t find any cheap and nice places in the tourist area.
The place we ended up staying at was a cozy cabin-like bungalow that was built in the jungle. It initially attracted us with its “stay three nights and pay for two” promotion, however, they retracted that claim and took down the sign that posted it after we tried to bargain with them. We still had a pretty good deal but were disappointed in that we gave in and paid an extra seven dollars. Budget!
The place was great except we had to share the room with geckos and other creepy crawlers that decided to drop by through the multiple cracks and holes in the roof. That and the toilet flooded really easily. Obviously a manufacturer or design flaw and has nothing to do with our lack of fibre for the past 2 months. We ended up switching rooms because the flooded toilet stunk up the entire place. We moved to the cabin beside ours and were satisfied with the better insulated room and working toilet.
The beaches in Ao Nang have an incredible amount of sea shells covering every inch. The scenery was also really nice but we only ended up spending our first day swimming and being
on the beach. The next day we spent around the touristy area, checking out the food stands and markets, booking tours and tickets to Malaysia. Ao Nang was extremely quiet when we were there, I think most people who come here stay in the resorts the whole time and don’t really venture out to see the rest of the town.
Its low season here, so lots of shops and restaurants stay closed and the prices of souvenirs, tours, and food drops dramatically. If it wasn't 50% off, it wasn't worth wasting time on. That definitely worked out well for us. We were lucky and ended up booking a tour to James Bond Island that included elephant trekking activities and a couple of shows for more than 50% off the original posted price. Turns out we were the only tourists that booked this trip in Ao Nang and had a van all to ourselves from Krabi to Phuket. The elephant trekking and shows left a bit to be desired but the sightseeing tour around James Bond Island and the canoeing through caves was awesome. Definitely worth it though; Cheryl and I had a fantastic time.
