Hey All,
Was actually up at 7am this morning much to my surprise and ready to hit the ground running. The guest house I am at is really nice, family run place. They serve toast, coffee and fruit for breakfast, but I was starved, so I had a cup a coffee and headed in search of food. I found this place close by that had a buffet style breakfast for 100 baht ($3). WOW, nice. They had fried eggs, little sausages, fried rice and this rice soup called Jok, not sure how you spell it. It also came with coffee, juice and toast. I love Asia!!
After breakfast went wandering about getting a feel for the area around my hotel. I ran into a tuk tuk driver and asked how much to drive me around the town and look at temples and such, and take me out to Wat Rong Khun or the White Temple. He said 500 baht ($15) so I took him up on it.
We stopped at a couple of local Buddhist Temples and then went to this place I had not heard about called the "Black Temple". It was this compound of a bunch
of different buildings with some that just seem like they did not belong. There was also a lot of furniture with chairs made out of Water Buffalo skulls. Found it rather bizarre but interesting. I am going to have to read up on this place when I get some time.
After all of that we drove out to Wat Rong Khun, and it did not disappoint. That place is just beautiful. I wish I had gone there first because all the bus loads of tourist had shown up when I got there. But even that could not damper this place. My favorite part was as you cross the bridge to go to the temple there is a pool with hands sticking out, and I was told this represents "want and greed". I found it well put. Sadly pictures do it no justice.
There was a sign as you entered the temple grounds that said something that I wish to get on my soap box about down the road. It says that due to the past behavior of foreign tourist, foreigners are not allowed to enter the temple. I DONT BLAME THE THAI'S ONE BIT!! Enough of that for
now.
We did quite a bit of riding around and I was really shocked how bit Chiang Rai is . I thought it was a smallish town, but found this not to be true.
Got back to my room around 2:30 and took a nice 3 hour nap. Much needed I may say. Around 7 I headed out to find the Saturday Night Walking Market I have heard so much about. Once again, was surprised. It was huge. Could not even cover it all, but I did my best. If you can dream about it you can find it here. It has everything you need. Tons of little stalls selling all kinds of treats. Had these banana waffles, several different meats on a stick, fruit shakes, and some rice treats steamed in banana leaves. I was full before I left. On the way back, I stopped and had a 1 hour foot massage for $3. It was heaven, well, maybe not for the poor girl playing with my foot, but I enjoyed it. She giggled and laughed and called me Budda. Get that a lot - lol.
It was a good busy day. I also booked a
day trip up to the Golden Triangle and such for tomorrow. Looking forward to that.
Tip: There are 2 pages of pics so look below for page 2, or you can click the very top picture and it will be bigger and you can also see all the pictures I posted for this day! Enjoy.
Off to bed again,
Happy Travels, Don
