"Marvel @ the slower pace of life" It was a pleasant surprise (shock) when I turned to last Thursday's (17 January 2008) of My Paper Travel feature. The entry that was submitted on 12th Sept 2007 was published today. 4 months on, I've long expected the submission to be axed. Anyway, I was still glad that this entry managed to get through the editors' knife even though it was heavily edited. Here's the original submission though for your reading pleasure. "My sister and I visited Udon Thani in late August 2007. Located in North Eastern Thailand, Udon Thani has escaped from the clutches of the tourist trap. Fortunately, Udon Thani offered otherwise This is one place I was thinking of going for quite sometime. Ever since chatting with Nisa, my favourite massager @ Phuket, I was curious of her hometown in northeastern Thailand. We were the only flight that landed at the Udon Thani International Airport today. Tourism is a slow & primitive business in this part of the world. However, thanks to Tiger Airways, it is now connected directly to Singapore 3 times a week. Its only link to the outside world for now. Most of the fellow passengers were the Thai workers returning home. The other Singaporeans we could identify were a few uncles going to the chicken farms. The time is 5.12am and 1 year on, I am back again at the Budget Terminal awaiting for our 6.45am flight to Udon Thani. Friends have been asking me what to expect from there, I won’t know for sure. It’s really a whole new world out there. Armed with a copy of Lonely Planet, we are going there with an open mind. Hopefully, by the end of this trip, my Thai vocabulary would have improved. And hopefully, if everything goes as planned, this could be the first of the 3 exotic trips to close for the year 2007. More tom yam to come in the coming days. I can’t wait…..
