Xavier- We've made it not quite to Laos yet, but we can see it. When we first got to Nong Khai, a border town in North East Thailand, we checked into Mut Mee Guesthouse. Its run by a garralous English gent and his mum, who was sitting having her morning tea in some post-colonialist time warp. The most impressive and obvious thing we noticed straight away here is the mighty Me Kong river- which we have to cross to pass into Laos. We arrived here yesterday and we could hear the music blearing over from the other side. In fact, a day later and it was still going. Thailand may have the fancy temples but Laos knows how to party! Our 3 days in Bangkok were totally cool, its Skytrain gliding above the rooftops, tasty roadside ... read more

It's funny the things you miss when they're taken away from you (or when you leave them). After having Pad Thai pretty much at least once daily for the past 30 days, I was pretty eager to eat some of the readily available, cheap western-style food in Laos. Today, though, as we returned to Thailand, I found myself quite looking forward to a pad thai supper. We'll see how long that lasts.... Pad Thai and fried rice are consistently at least half the price of any other kind of food here in Thailand, so that's what I eat. ALWAYS. I wonder what my main staple will become in Malaysia? Only 3 more days! We are also sort of ashamed to say that it was a momentous occasion we we spotted the first 7-11 that we'd laid ... read more

A great ride on the motorbike along the Mekong river past temples, rice fields, banana trees and waterfalls. The ride took me about 100km west of Nongkhai to Sangkhom, a sleepy little town on the Mekong river. The further you go west, the hillier the road gets offering some fantastic view points on the way. ... read more

I had 3 weeks at the Temple School Prathatwittaya to teach English and Computer skills together with Ellen and Wayne. Tharabun, the cyber headmaster, was assisting and interpreting whenever he could. We had fun putting web newsletters for the novices together, doing Powerpoint presentations about foreign countries and much more. I liked when a novice who had picked Japan for his presentation finished off with the words: "We wish to go to Japan to learn Japanese and to see beautiful girls."... read more

Openmind Volunteering project Teaching English and Computer skills Bandung High School/Isan, North East Thailand 6 - 10 Nov 2006 Molly, Wayne and I went to Bandung to link up the school with a Swedish school in Lund via a web newspaper. By the end of the week we had more or less achieved what we wanted despite the quite erratic internet connections. To pass the waiting time we joined the English teachers in their lessons and entertained the kids with question and answer games and curious presentations about our home countries.... read more

On the first full moon night in November this festival to celebrate the end of the rainy season takes place. People build small boats ("kratongs") with banana leaves and flowers and float them with lit candels and incense sticks on any water they can find. What better location could we be in than Nongkhai on the Mekong river..... For more info on Loy Kratong follow the link Mutmee and go to Calender of Events and then to Loy Kratong ... read more

I was in Vientiane, Lao about to cross the Laos / Thailand border via a huge bridge that crosses the Mekong called the Friendship Bridge, financed by Australia at the end of my last blog.... I think i should go back a few steps as there are a few things i forgot to say about Lao. I forgot to mention that while i was there i went to a Traditional Lao Massage house every single day, yep, every day - except for the last day during my projectile vomiting stage. First up i would go for an hour massage which is a full body oil massage. Done on a thin mattress on the ground, now, i have had hundreds of massages and learnt how to massage... BUT this massage was the BEST i have EVER had. ... read more
