We flew up to Udon Thani from Suvarnabhumi airport in Bangkok by Air Asia, good trip, about one hour. Got a taxi from Udon airport to Centara hotel which is right next door to Central Plaza shopping centre.Really nice hotel & excellent location but their wi-fi was being re-negotiated & the going rate was 150 baht for one hour which was ridiculously expensive so we ended up in an internet cafe opposite the front entrance to central plaza which was 30 baht an hour & cheap to print.znothing moves in Udon Thani till after 11am including the shops so we used the hotels swimming pool in the mornings. There's not a lot to see so we mostly relaxed for a couple of days before getting the bus to Nong khai which is on the border of Thailand & Laos. We'd booked Nong Khai Resort which is a lovely place, clean rooms, beautiful grounds & pool, breakfast for the princely sum of $25AUD for 2 people. Its very close to the railway station & the only downside was the distance from the centre of Nong Khai & riverside area, about 10 minutes by tuk tuk cost 80 baht for 2, This is where the markets & restaurants are.Tha Sadet market is open every day till around 6pm & you can buy almost anything, its a lot like Chatachuk market in Bangkok.we ende up moving from Nong Khai Resort to a riverside guesthouse with views over the Mekong to Laos.its called Baan Mae Rim Nan & the riverside rooms cost 700 baht for 2 but no brekky which is'nt a problem as there are heaps of restaurants & cafes in this area.next time we come we'll rent a car as the traffic is very light & there's more to see in the surrounding areas. We were considering going across to Vientiane , capital of laos but most people said it was'nt worth the visa fee, $30US just for a couple of days in Vientiane as it is very quiet there & very similar to the Thai side, so we decided to leave laos till next time when we'll fly to Luang Prabang from Bangkok & work our way back to Vientiane by bus, a spectacular scenic drive we've been told, & Luang Prabang ,which is world heritage listed is said to be very nice.We leave Nong Khai by bus tomorrow back to Udon Thani for 2
