Just in the middle of the road, no problem there then ! A lot of people have asked me how do you handle travelling alone ? This question or even this fear went through my mind as I left Europe behind because I had no idea . But the truth is I was never alone or lonely , alone by choice sometimes but never lonely . You meet the most amzing people abroad both locals and other travellers, all you got to do is talk to people and you find some most interesting and fun people , especially locals they love any contact with the " outside " world , often in the poorer supressed countries they feel forgotten by the western world and love it when people show an interest in them and thier cultures.
I am now ( March 2013)in Argentina and have been surrounded by people ..Argies , Columbians, Peruvians ,Paraguyians ( pissheads) and representatives form most native speaking countries and that from my very first night 4 months ago .
Anyway back to Bangkok!
So I had met a fellow traveller Rosie and we started our escapades that very night with a few beers in BKK ( Bangkok ) and arranged to meet the next day
Rosie
Great laugh to sort out a plan of where and how to get out of this dump of a city , well that is unfair because 90% of the city is wonderfull , just the area we were in was a total shit hole of a dump .
So we had a look around the rest of BKK , got a tuc tuc to Koh San Road and had a lovely lunch with many beers followed by a foot massage all for about a fiver ! We got on great and knew we were going to have a laugh . Rosie was only on tour for 1 month more and I had a feeling we would spend a lot of time together . She had lived in South Africa for the last 20 years and her mate was coming over 2 weeks or so later for a holiday , I met her as well and she was a good laugh . We never got around to finding out how to get out of the city so we just got drunk instead !
Next day we went up the river for a trip to some place she knew from about 25
Room with a view
River people , hard life but so happy years ago when she was there as a young backpacker, So we jumped into some boat and off we went . God this river is so polluted it is such a shame , really dirty and minging with dead animals , rubbish and sewage floating around . Unfortunatly for the boat owner some vegetation got stuck and clogged up his propeller! I must be a jink , second boat trip second break down . anyway over the poor guy went in the minging water! I feel sorry for the " river people " these are settlements who live on the river in houses on stillts . They wash themselves and their cloths in this water , god knows what it was like here in the floods of 2011 but they were happy , amazing how all over the poor people are so happy and wave and sing , the kids play and laugh but they literally have nothing !
That night we went to the highest roof top restaurant in Asia its called the sky top or something and is like 80 stories high , What a view up there and what a safty issue not fence or barracade
Funny outboard engines
Big engines , little boats means go fast up river ! , just a rope ! and it was windy up there , we sat on the edge anyway and it was amazing , so surreal to look over the city from so high up and no protection to stop us falling over the edge .
My diving course was meant to be in 2 days so we talked about what to do , I decided to go and do my diving course and get a bus from BKK to Surat Thani about 15 hour bus journey then a ferry to Koh Tao and Rosie got invited from her SA friends in Pataya to go and visit for a few days .Bit dissapointed because we got on so well , but arranged to meet up on Koh ao after my diving course was finished .So I booked the bus for about 10 US$ equivalant .
The next morning she went to Pataya with a taxi a 5 hour drive for about 20 US$ , not bad really ! and I was getting ready to go on my bus journey .
She arrived about 1 hour before the bus was picking me up from the hotel ( yes they
Polluted fish
Would rather eat a rat then fish from this river even come and get you , what a service ! ) and she rang to say it was horrible there because her friends were being funny and she had to get a hotel instead of staying with them and said she would come to Koh Tao to meet me instead . Bit silly I said as I wil be diving non stop for 1 week and will have no time , so she suggested for me to go there and delay the diving! Well quick e mail to the diving school to say see you another time , ran back to the travel agents to cancel the bus and get my promised refund which she denied even offering me ( bloody Thais !! ) so I lost 10 US , so what . Then got a dodgy hotel porter to get me a taxi to Pataya for the same as what Rosie had paid and off I went ! I sms her to get her to book me a Hotel a al cheapo and next thing I knew I was in a Taxi off to a place I had never heard off and no idea what part of the country
Over you go mate
Poor chap had to dive in that water to free the propeller it was ! How plans can change , I loved this travelling now . just free and open to do anything you want , great !
