Bangkok 23-26 March 2013
Bangkok the capital of Thailand, the place to discover beauty and fashion in a more affordable rate. We’ll I didn't came to Bangkok for plastic surgery or to shop for clothes, but to discover their historical and cultural attractions. I travelled with my travel buddy girl friend.
Our journey begins from Siem Reap via bus ride to Poipet/Aranyaprathet border that is around more or less 3 hours. Then upon crossing the border we were arranged in groups to Bangkok to take a 13-seater van. It wasn't a pleasant arrangement, we’ll I will no longer detailed the experience. I suggest you just visit this website because it’s the same experience we had.
https://www.lonelyplanet.com/thorntree/forums/asia-south-east-asia-mainland/topics/siem-reap-to-bangkok-don-t-take-the-bus-go-by-train. The good thing is I keep a positive outlook and a joyful spirit whenever I travel so despite the unpleasant experience I still find ways to smile and be thankful.
We reached Khaosan at around pass 7pm, this road is popular among many tourist specially for backpackers and budget travellers like us. We stayed in a budget hotel named New World City which is about 8-10 minutes walk from Khaosan Road. This hotel has a sister named Nouvo City which
is more younger and much prettier.
It’s a free and easy second day, so we decided to visit the nearest tourist spots. This time we had a deja vu, were the tuk-tuk driver over charged us for a short ride from our hotel to Grand Palace, what a very unpleasant experience again but lesson learned ask the driver how much they charged first before taking the ride. Well moving on, the entrance to the Grand Palace was crowded with many group of tourists, there was also an entrance fee of 600 baht. We only had a quick peek inside, then we left and check out the tourist information booth. She instructed us to visit Wat Arun instead, about 15-20 minutes walked from the palace we have reached the Maharaj pier just right next to the Department of Internal Trade office, where we took a boat ride to Wat Arun for about 50 baht. Inside are different pagodas or prang in Thai influenced by Khmer style pagodas. We actually describe the pagodas in Bangkok as the modernised version of those pagodas in Siem Reap. Moving on, after our returned boat ride from Wat Arun we walked again to another temple
called Wat Pho this was about 8-10 minutes walk, the entrance fee was 200 baht. This temple was famous for biggest reclining buddha which is about 150 feet length. This time we feel a bit more exhausted and so we decided to take lunch and head back to our hotel. In the hotel we booked our day tour for the following day. We rested that afternoon in the hotel, I had a room service Thai massage to relieve my exhaustion. Then that night we went near Khaosan for dinner at My Darling Restaurant.
The next day was our day tour to floating market, Kwai River and Tiger Temple. This tour was not really near Bangkok, the travel is about 1-2 hours depending on the traffic and road condition. Our first stop was the Damnoen Saduak Floating Market, this is actually a community living in a long stretch of canal. The boat ride was an exciting experience, I was amazed by how these vendors sell their goods while sitting on their boats. After our floating market we had our lunch first, since our next stop was the Tiger Temple which is about more or less 3 hours travel from Damnoen.
Upon reaching the Tiger Temple in Kanchanaburi you can feel that the temperature rose up, the heat is on!. There is an entrance fee of 600 baht, we were directed to the ‘meet and greet’ part of the temple, a group of volunteers gives us some introduction about the place. Since the temperature was really hot, the tigers were all resting, it was the best time to get a closer look and touch the tigers. Apart from the tigers as the main attraction there are also plenty of other animals inside this temple. But due to a very hot weather, we didn't explore much of the place. Then for our last stop it was the Kwai River, where the famous Bridge trail track is. This bridge was also known as Death Railway, as many labourers during the WW II died to construct this railway. I understand from the couple in our group tour, that we can actually rent a boat to explore this river, but unfortunately we don't have much time as the we need to head back to Bangkok for another 3-4 hours travel.
So for our last night in Bangkok, we decided to stay up
late in Khaosan eating and drinking as this is the place to have some fun.
