Thailand has met my expectations and then some! Our first trip was to Damnoen Saduak, which is a province outside of Bangkok. We went to the floating market, which was an amazing sight! The market is made up of many canals in which boats with fruits, other foods, and souvenirs float down and sell to the people on boats or on the main walkways. We took a boat around and saw all the vendors, and had a really interesting lunch. We got these noodle dishes, which had these balls and meat in them, which we later found out were fish balls - needless to say, I am a little more reluctant to try mystery meat now! After lunch we went to a temple there, which was beautiful, and they gave us these gold leaflets, which we put on the Buddha there. It was a pretty amazing trip, and we got to see a really traditional part of Thailand lifestyle. The markets used to be more functional for the local people, but they are mostly for tourists now. I tried some interesting red fruit with green spikes, it was really tasty! We also had some coconut sugar, which tasted a lot like
really sweet corn flakes. Ryan and Sarah got coconut pancakes, which were like wafers with a marshmallow-like filling and carrot shavings on top, they were really delicious! When we got back, we had dinner at this place called the Park, it is the restaurant at the golf course on campus, which was really good. It was right on the river, so it was a nice setting, and there was this Thai musician who came and played guitar for us. He played Neil Young's "Heart of Gold" which was awesome, and some traditional Thai songs, it was really cool!
