Thailand!!!
After we finally trusted a bus driver we were taken to the centre of Bangkok. The city is nothing like I have experienced before. The road we are based is where it appears to be happening. There are street sellers on every pavement selling cooked insects, clothes, hats, beads, toys, tuk tuk rides, smoothies, fruit and even girls! It is extremly humid so there are many bars open and these are constantly pumping loud western music. In terms of the people that walk these streets it appears that every nationality is here. There are British, Ozzy's, Kiwi's, Swedish, African, Chinese, Indian, American and obviously the Thai. You also get the extreme travellers. We saw an old man who must have been late 70's in with his hair braided, long beard and his trusty old fashioned back pack. You also get the very odd people. This one guy about our age walks a bit like Lee Evans and he smaked James backside then blew on the back of Nicks neck, kicked me then ran off asking people if they would by a byro pen he found on the floor??? Another guy we met had beer caps stuck on his head,
his facial hair must have been growing for years and he stood all night facinated with Mcdonalds door swingin back and forward??? Another type of folk are the Thai street sellers. The women walk aroud with wooden frogs that they make "ribet" and monkeys that squeak. They will tap you on the shoulder stick a silly hat on your head and ribet the frog in your face and seriously you will be approached at least 10 times a day. The most annoying of all are the Tuk Tuk drivers that want to take you to sex shows all the time, they even have a menu and prices!
Thursday 21st
On our to the hostel we saw lots of people gathered around one of the local temples apparently the Queen was inside. We waited for 40 minutes but with the heat and our large backpacks decided it would be best to find our hostel. The hostel we found is in the very centre of the busiest street in Bangkok yet we are the only ones staying there. However the facilities are excellent and it works out 3 pounds a night! Unfortunatly we couldnt lock the door; so we asked
the owner to help and he blamed us and made us pay for the key. Furthermore when I say he, he may be she if you know what I mean.
Friday 22nd
Me and James woke to find our mosquito nets had fallen from the ceiling and had landed on our heads, didnt get bitten though. We then ventured into our new surrounding and bought omlette and rice for 20p!We then met with the others and went on a shopping spree as the clothes we had for China -5 were obviously not suitable for 35 degrees Bangkok. I bought tshirts, a pair of sunglasses, shorts and braclets.
After our shop we went to a local bar called Guillivers bar where we treated our selves to pub lunches. I bought fish and chips for 100 B which is 1 pound 40pence!
We wanted to see the main highlights of the city so regrettably agreed to a Tuk Tuk ride for only 1pence each. The drivers wizzed around the city I though we were going to fall out. The Tuk TUk behind us was performing wheelies! We visited the Golden temple which had excellent views of the city
and was full of monks praying. We met up with our Tuk Tuk driver once again who said " one more stop". We didnt want another stop but he didn't listen to us and took us to one of his friends shops. We stepped inside and of all things a traveller wants it was a suit shop! We were in and out like a flash. However he wasnt happy that we didnt buy anything so took us to another suit shop! He told us to go inside and pretend to like the suits. So we ended up sitting down for 30minutes discussing pinstripes, and fitting sizes. Our excuse in the end was we have no money and we will be back tomorrow.
After finally arriving home we wanted to see what the night life was like. After searching a few bars nobody was serving alcohol. We then found out there is no alcohol for 4 days because of an election! We drank our alternative fanta overlooking the river and listening to a local jazz band on the park. We headed back to our hostel and found ourselves being persuaded to join a street party. This was great fun we met
loads of people, had free alcohol ( apparently whiskey is allowed to be drunk??) and had the top half of a bar to ourselves. On the way home from the party we were approached by a lot of weird looking girls hmmm.
Saturday 23rd
Highlight of the day was definitely the Bangkok river ride. We had a wooden speed boat to ourselves and the driver put full throttle down for the majority of the ride. The river cut through small shanty towns on stilts where the children were swimming. ( The water is very dirty though). We stopped occasionally for river markets and to look at the cat fish. The driver unfortunately theb left us next to the palace after he said he would take us home. We had a Thai curry for 40p and then tried to find a lift back. After the experiences of the Tuk TUk yesterday we decided it wouldnt be a good idea. However it was cheaper so all 5 of us crammed into one Tuk Tuk. But guess what we stopped of at a diamond shop...why would would want massive diamonds travelling!! This shop was also in the opposite direction to our
hostel. So after we didnt buy anything the driver said 2 more shops so we ended up ditching him and finding a taxi ( so much for saving money.)
In the evening we watched United thrash Newcastle in the local bar and met two guys one from Bramhall! and the other Warrington. It is a small world.
