Yesterday we arrived in Ayuthaya by public bus from Kanchanaburi, about 5 hours wiht a transfer. The buses are cool - they have these built in fans and the windows and doors remain open so there is plenty of breeze. yes, the doors remain open because as I already mentioned in my Bangkok entry nothing ever seems to stop moving. The same with these buses. They travel at high speed but if someone along the road raises their hand the buses come to a screeching halt and these people get in as the bus starts moving again. That's why they dont close the doors - everything would take too long.
As the title says, sometimes you get lucky and sometimes you dont. we have not written for a couple of days because we could not find convenient internet or we were just too tired. But we are going to fill in the past entrys when we have a bit more time and faster internet than here. Look then also for pictures as we are not able to upload these today.
Here in Ayuthaya where the bus from Kanchanaburi dropped us off was very close to where the Guest House
Wat Maha That
This is only a small part of the huge Wat is, which is great because in some other places it is quite a slog from the bus or train station. After we settled and unpacked we took an evening tour of the temples which we heard about from some other travelers. Some temples are lighted up at night so you get in a pickup truck with two rows of seats and it takes you around to see them. First we saw the sunset which was strange because the sun dissapears so far above the horizon and then drove on to see the other temples. It was very nice because we got to see some that we would not get to see otherwise because they are very far and can only be reached on a car.
Today we got going relatively early and ended everything very early. It was unbelievably hot and very humid today. After walking around for about 2.5 hours we were finished. But in that time we managed to see all the temples that one could reasonably walk to as well as a museum, so we were not that dissappointed with ourselves.
The temples here look very different than the ones in Bangkok because this city
is a former capital and is a lot older than Bangkok. By the way, I was amazed to discover that what we call Thailand has only really existed for at most 800-900 years. One of the oldest cities where we are heading tomorrow is only about 680 years old. For some reason I had this idea that this is a very old nation with old things. But no. The wats here are mostly laid out of bricks adn I think the climate is not too kind to teh buildings here. The combination of the wet season and the very hot and dry season cannot be good for them. So even though the buildings are not that old, they still look really old.
The rest of the day we lay about and recovered from our walk this morning as well as got lunch. The selection of food in this city is incredibly dissapointing, especially after Bangkok but also just in general. Oh well, we are not hungry at all and that is good. The banana shakes do leave something better to be desired. And we already started making a list of all the things we want to eat again when
Buddha in Tree
Just in case you cannot see, the sign says 'Please do not stand over the Buddha's head' we go back to Bangkok for one day before flying to Bali.
