Happy Thanksgiving! Wishing everyone an enjoyable day and delicious dinner! Our dinner was a veggi rice dish on a train to Northern Sri Lanka, and it was quite good! Sri Lanka - only our 3rd day here but already so many impressions. One thing for sure, it is not India. Due to the proximity and some reading, we thought it would be. And there is plenty of Indian influence, many of the women wear the beautiful saris, the men do the head waggle, but the country is a much quieter, friendlier country. Perhaps some of that is the difference of a country of 21 million vs a billion, but whatever it is - we really like Sri Lanka. First, it is much quieter. The traffic is still quite chaotic to our eyes, lots of tuk tuks, but not the constant horn blowing. Second, the kindness and friendliness. Tonight we are on the train, and one of the train stewards calls our guesthouse to confirm which of the 2 train stations we should get off. Pretty amazing! And even when it might be to their economic advantage to lie to us, they don't! Sorry India.
We have spent the last 2
days roaming the streets of the capital, Colombo. Visiting Hindu and Buddhist temples. At the Hindu temple we hear a flute player across the street. It is a snake charmer. Of course, I need to get a photo, but as I approach and zoom in, I do wonder how far they can spit! The temples are beautiful. We also spent some time at the crowded markets. But it is hot! Our first, and only purchase so far were 2 hankerchiefs, to wipe the sweat dripping off our face.
The guest house we stayed at was about 30 mins outside the city, so abit of a hot ride into the city. But their place is a wonderful oasis, so worth the ride. Last night the manager and his girlfriend took us out to see a beautiful old hotel on the beach, and then later out to dinner. It was great touring the city with them.
We are now in Aruyandubarm(Sp?) the former capital of the country from 200 BC to 900AD. We will be roaming the ruins.
Well, I want to get this posted. Enjoy your day!

We are thankful for friends like you. Great to hear from you guys that you got there safe and sound. Sounds like Sir Lanka is nice and Colombo looks like a modern Asian city. We get to learn geography, historical sites and travel itineraries by your travels. Thanks so much. Looking forward to the next blog. Hugs to you. R and R
