Hey all!
Thought I'd give you a little update on summer time here in Bonghwa. It's definitely my favorite season, it's been so fantastic watching them preparing the paddy fields, standing in their huge hats measuring the water - growing the plants and then separating them across the fields. Suddenly the landscape has turned from brown to green - can't believe everywhere you travel all the fields you see it''s incredible!
The best view - ( which unfortunately i can't photograph as it's while I bomb to school with my vice principal!!) is as we drive from Bonghwa to Bongseong. You turn a corner and look over field after field of paddy fields, a few farmers in their brimmed hats in the field, the old blue roofed houses dotted along the field and in the background you see the mist covered mountains rising up as the sun cuts through the blue sky - it really takes my breath away every time. I've taken a few shots out of the window of the bus on my home to remind me and try and give you an idea of my drive.
The other view is from my apartment, looking out of the window
across field over field of bright green paddy fields. I honestly wake up and wander to school and think how amazing and lucky I am to get to see this everyday.
Have a few funny stories this week - I have a disabled girl who is in my English classes but can't speak English. Until recently she's been terrified of me, always running away at the sight of me (who can blame her right!) but recently she's been very intrigued and asking my Korean co-teacher questions about.
The best in class the other day (in Korean) was 'Han- Teacher, Yes, "how is Ceri so great at English? How long has she been studying? Do you think I can be that good too? Do you think her parents can speak English too?" (a rough translation!) I thought this was ace!!
Another funny one for you was a comment made at a school - I was told the other day that they were very angry because rainy season was late. I asked so when does it normally come? Oh on the 11 th June until July 26th (exact dates - I apologize if I remembered them wrong!) Oooh I said,
always the exact same date? - 'Of course!!' they said confused at how I could ask such a stupid question!!!! silly me, a British person with totally changeable and unpredictable weather being confused at being able to tell the date from the start of the rain - wow we'd have lots of June 11th!
You'll also see a picture of me with my short hair! hmmmmm....this was a nice accident!! I decided to brave the hairdressers again - in I went all fine and out I walked with a mullet!!! yep a Korean mullet!! So my talented 'creative' friend (haha!) John bought a pair of nail scissors and had to turn professional with my hair! I have to say much better than where I paid and from now on my own private hair cutter!!! haha!!
But now rainy season has officially started you'll be happy to know - however it's not normal. We seem to be having days of sun, days of odd rain so farmers are very upset as their fields are not full enough. Obviously global warming is having its toll here too.
We had a singing contest at the elementary school - see pics
which was great - some these little ones trying to sing just cracked me up!! We also had a symphony orchestra come and play for the middle and elementary school and they proceeded to play the school anthem 😊
I have enclosed a picture for you to have a laugh at, I had to buy a face mask to be able to sleep, sun has started rising so early it's getting light by 4-5 am!! decided a plain mask be boring so check it out!!
Well that's my round up! How is everyone? I do have some more news, I'm all booked and due back in the UK on the 2nd September, until end September when I head to Barcelona for my next teacher training course. Due back to the Uk early November. I have got a job in Kyrgyzstan teaching English in Bishkek so I'll be off straight after Christmas!! So excited!!! 😊 Really looking forward to catching up with everyone. Missing you all lots and love hearing from you all.
The pictures here really don't do justice to the views and atmosphere here at the moment but i hope you can imagine the rest because
it's just the best feeling every time I look around, I feel so happy to be able to be here.
Big hugs and love
Cer xxxx
