Hello friends and family!
It has been a bit of time since the last blog, we've been gone for a week to Jeju Island and with the combined lawsuits going on with the major internet companies here it's been tough to get online. But, here we are! I am exhausted tonight, got home from school at 7:30, got a $5 pizza around the corner and am now trying to wind down. So, the blog may be shorter and I won't be able to tell you about all of Jeju, but it'll be a start.
First though, I must tell you the hilarious happenings here before we left for Jeju. Mike and I are still amazed at the craziness of the cab drivers here. Thursday morning before our week off the cabbie took off while Mike was still half in/half out of the cab. We're all yelling at him and all he says is sorry and keeps driving. Man, the least he could've done was give us a free cab ride! That evening we decided to go to our local Lotte department store - kind of like a Bay, to pick up a few essentials like a toilet scrubber and
a towel. So we're looking around and all of a sudden this crazy lady came up to mike and was like, where are you from? Mike was like, Canada. And so she said, come with me. I followed behind, we went past this group of like 10 people and I figured, maybe she wanted us to translate something in English or something... I don't know. Anyways, this lady that we later found out was psycho, brought Mke to these two cabinet things and started yelling about one having a line and she wanted a line but the other had no line on it. It was the wierdest thing ever. Mike was like what do you want me to do about it? And she just kept on talking and then it turned into full out crazy screaming and I was thinking get us out of here. People started looking away and the security guard came to relieve mike, but then this lady tried to tell the security guard that mike and her were friends and they were having a conversation. Wow. So finally we got away and kept shopping but we could still hear her absolutely screaming from the other side
of the store. Who knows why she picked the only white guy in the entire store to yell at, it was interesting to say the least. Then we found a Lotteria in the bottom floor of the store which was like a gross type of McDonalds, and we were excited. Oh my goodness, that was the craziest day ever. So we're sitting having a burger and the little kid that rides the bus with us always, the one that smooched me on the cheek, saw us at the store and came running over. Then he left with his mom for a minute and they came back with a gift of rice cakes for Chusok holiday (it's like our thanksgiving). It was really sweet.
So finally Friday came and went, we started our week off of school and Saturday night we got on a plane to fly to Jeju Island. It's off of the southern tip of South Korea and it took about an hour flight from Seoul. It was a pretty quick flight, but then we got on an airport limousine (a bus) to our hotel in Jeju. We pulled up to this hotel at about 10:00 at night,
and it was amazing. The lobby is incredible with all these big Coy fish in a pond looping around the lobby lounge. It had a sort of lethbridge lodge type of feeling for those of you that know Lethbridge. So here we are, exhausted and starving. We took our stuff to our room which was amazing, (the bed was so comfy!) then we needed to find something to eat. One thing I am learning about Koreans so far is their logic is totally backwards from Canada, or maybe I should say they have absolutely no logic. Their summer season is considered July and August. So we are at this beautiful hotel, it's like 30 degrees out, there's a wonderful blue outdoor pool and it's only open July and August - summer season. We go to the front desk to find out what restaurants are open and they tell us this one outside that was kind of neat. We walked out there and nope - not open. It's 10:45 by this time and everything is closed. We went back to our room and looked up the room service - our last resort. We found out (hallelujah!) the room service was open
until 1:00am, about the only thing that runs regular hours outside of July and August. So for some reason Mike wanted a caesar salad, and although it was $16 with 20% tax on top of that, we thought, for that price it's got to be a big salad! We ordered it and 15 minutes later a plate is delivered to our door.... About 10 lettuce leafs, with some bacon looking things on top. We were dissapointed with the size, but we were starving. So, Mike took the first 'bacon' bite, but it wasn't bacon at all... I think it was raw anchovy. Mike almost puked. I almost fell of the bed laughing. Then, we were looking around the hotel room and we found that our toilet had a bidet. Okay, we're not very cultured, or used to the fancy things in life and mike started pressing buttons on it. I'm sure you can just imagine how this turned out... all of a sudden this hose came out of the back of the toilet and sprayed mike from across the room (this thing had front and rear cleaning, awesome once you get used to it...and AIR dry...AIR DRY...a 2 minute job
turns into 30 minute excitement). Again, I don't think I've laughed this hard in a while. We finally fell into bed after our adventures ready to start a new day. I'm really going to have to go to bed now, so you'll have to tune in next time to find out about the rest of our gong show trip.
We love you all and hope that you are staying safe and healthy! Take Care.
Blessings.
