May 10th - 13th

I arrived late Thursday night from Melbourne. It was funny to read on the immigration card in big red all caps - DEATH TO DRUG TRAFFICKERS. I guess it was strange to think about going to a country where they still punish people by caning - granted, they had abolished this as a punishment for gum chewing a few years back. Singapore was like being in a super sterile version of Disneyland or the world's largest shopping mall- you could practically eat off the ground everywhere you went. It was especially funny because Jen was still in culture shock from having just come in from India. It couldn't be more different - there were no horns, no cow shit, no beggars, no burning garbage.

It was also quite a bit more expensive than I was used to, so we didn't do too much there. I think we ended up staying too long. At night we'd go have dinner down on either Boat Quay or Clarke Quay. It all just seemed too clean. Maybe we didn't give it a chance - I know we really didn't have the opportunity to experience much of the real night life, but that's ok. We were happy to get on the road again. We booked a bus to Mersing and headed out of town early Tuesday morning on our way to Pulau Tioman.
