Nobody to take a picture of me so all you get is the sign...proof I was there :)
I got to Singapore a couple of days ago and have done some exploring as well as relaxing. The city feels very safe, there is great food EVERYWHERE, the public transit is the best I have seen and it is very clean. I love their MRT (subway) everything is touch screen, it is super clean and so easy to navigate. I dont think I have had to wait more than five minutes for a train. love it.
I am staying at the Betel Box hostel which has been just fine. I went into this trip saying that I didnt think I could do a dorm room but it is actually pretty good. I am in an all girls room and everyone has been very nice, it is fun to have dinner partners, etc. The management of the hostel is helpful, there is a relaxing common area and breakfast is included. The only downside (which Mario warned me of prior to coming) is that I think that the bars around here attract ladies of the night. Hasn't been an issue, everything seems really safe.
My first dinner was at an open air food center, had great dumpling and noodle soup and a diet coke with ice! It was so hard to find diet coke in Bali and I was scared of the ice, here I got a massive glass of ice. Bliss can come from insignificant things that you wouldn't expect.
The next day I walked down to the East side beach. I thought maybe I was in the wrong place because I was the only one in a swimsuit, but there was sand and there was water... Also I have never seen so many cargo ships off in my life, Baltimore harbor doesnt even come close. I counted over 100 huge ships in the distance. I wish I would have had my camera, I will have to head down there again.
The Singapore Zoo is world renowned. It has an open concept so you can get closer to a lot of the animals and it is set in a rainforest setting. They have both a zoo that is open during the day as well as the Night Safari.
Yesterday, I decided to skip the day zoo and just venture to the Night Safari, which I had heard was great. They do a VERY good job with their zoo. It felt like Disney's animal kingdom without the rides. There were several shows, I watched some of a native dance type show as well as the animal show which was cute. The animals interacted with the audience, if I was 20 years younger I would have LOVED this show. After the shows I went on the tram ride and we saw the usual suspects, tigers, lions, elephants, rhinos.
The only downside to the zoo was getting there and back. My hostel suggested I take the bus the ENTIRE way. Bad move. It took 2 hours. On the way home I made the executive decision to make up my own route home via bus and MRT (subway) took one hour including wait time and walking MUCH better.
I would recommend this as something to do at night in Singapore. If I was with kids I would do both zoos.
Fact of the day...did you know that the Markhor is the national animal of Pakistan.
Well that wraps up my first full day in Singapore.
