Singapore was nothing like I remember but not in a bad way. We rolled up in the late afternoon and thinking we were experts on finding our accommodation without a map we headed off in the right direction. I don’t know how but along the way we must have made a wrong turn because after an hour of walking with our packs on we were nowhere near. I know this because everyone we asked didn’t have a clue and they were locals. Eventually we admitted defeat and flagged a taxi. A little expensive but well worth the money. We had a few nights booked at the Footprints Hostel in little India. And believe me if you had blindfolded me and then dropped me here I would have sworn I was in India and I have been so i should know. These settlements are so like the real India it’s scary. The blokes stare the same and you cannot find a western restaurant to save your life, luckily we did and it was the only one just about. We grabbed some munch and headed back to the hostel to settle in to the first dorm we had had in ages. Ten people
in a dorm, now that’s luxury. LOL Footprints had free internet and wifi, we also got free breakfast which consisted of cereal and toast. The staff was really friendly and there were many travellers to chat with.
We actually arrived in Singapore at a really good time. We were told there was a festival going to happen in little India just a five minute walk from our hostel. The main road had a lane closed off and the festival was about piercings. Men would walk a few miles with outrageous piercings attached to giant sculptures around their body. We saw one guy pulling a float by hooks in his back. It was very nice but we didn’t stick around too long as it was freaking me out. I had been to Singapore before so I took Craig to Orchid road which is the best place to do some shopping, if you have money that is, and we didn’t so we just window shopped. We went in search of non Indian food and found a small mall that sold everything from Mc scran (McDonalds), subway to pizza and Singapore local cuisine. Of course we chose subway but the next night
we tried two different local dishes and we were not impressed.
The next tourist attraction that we visited was Sentosa Island and we stood on the southernmost tip of continental Asia. We walked around the island beach area and passed underwater world where we took picture of turtles. That afternoon we headed back to little India and a hostel called THE PRINCE OF WALES to watch the Australian open final as Andy Murray was playing. The guy in the bar was a penis, I think he may have been the owner but he came up to me and Craig and basically told us that if we were not drinking alcohol we had to leave. We had bought drink but obviously that wasn’t good enough. We didn’t really want to drink alcohol so I thought that was well out of order, imagine he said that to a recovering alcoholic, what a dick. The beers were only small and cost $9, what a rip off. The soft drinks were like $5, which in English pounds was approx £2.50. All he wanted was money from us so we left. We still watched the tennis but back at our crib.
Our last day and we headed to China Town; we got off the subway and walked towards the merlion on the quayside. My direction was slightly off that day and we ended up walking for ages and the heat was unbearable. In the end Craig got us there and we took a few pics and went for Mc scran as it was cheap and we were running out of Singapore $. Our flight was not until 21:55 so we picked our luggage from the hostel and got the MRT to the airport. It only takes about half an hour and only cost us a couple of bucks. For tea we had our fifty millionth subway of that week and waited to board our flight. Boarding time arrived and there was no plane at the end of the walkway, great we were going to be delayed, luckily Singapore airport has free wifi so I surfed the net until we were ready to go 2 hours later. We flew with Jetstar and the plane was ok but I could not get comfy to sleep, there was a crying kid 2 rows in front and by the end of the journey I was going to gag him. Every time you were on the verge of dropping off to sleep he would get louder. I don’t think anyone got any sleep that night.
