The Maldives was long a sultanate, first under Dutch and then under British protection. It became a republic in 1968, three years after independence. Since 1978, President Maumoon Abdul GAYOOM - currently in his sixth term in office - has dominated the islands' political scene. Following riots in the capital Male in August 2004, the president and his government have pledged to embark upon democratic reforms, including a more representative political system and expanded political freedoms. Tourism and fishing are being developed on the archipelago. To be updated

The day started with a very nutritious breakfast to sustain us through our morning’s snorkelling trip organised by the resort, which consisted of two pastries and some pineapple! The resort puts on two snorkelling trips a day, one at 10am and the other at 4pm, but apparently the best viewings are in the morning when conditions are better. The morning trips are further away and tend to be about an hours boat ride by dhoni, and today we had eight Italians and the British couple, who in fact are the only other British people on the island! They fly home tomorrow [View Full Entry]

Turtle dive! Last night before we headed to bed, we asked our rep when she thought we would be heading out to turtle point to see the turtles and mantas. She thought today, and so told us to meet at 10am at the panorama jetty. Dutifully we were there, after a quick healthy breakfast of papaya and pineapple. We did grab a pasty as we left though, but really you need one those fatty things to give you good buoyancy in the water! That’s my excuse anyway. At the pier we discovered there were 14 others coming with us. What a [View Full Entry]

We awoke to a glorious sunny Sabbath day and had a very lazy start after some bible study. After lunch we decided to head out into the lagoon for some snorkeling, this time heading further out to the reef as apparently it’s quite shallow there and the fish are supposedly very good. As we donned our masks and fins, a lady a few bungalows down came towards us and said she would show us a good place to snorkel. She was from Sheffield, one of the few other Brit’s on the island. Before we even had time to put our masks [View Full Entry]

The Mermaid
Unglam girls
The Stingray!!!

This is our first day where we actually ate three meals out of a possible five! So far we’ve only managed breakfast and then dinner as the meal times are somewhat odd. Breakfast is from 8-1pm, Lunch 1-2pm and Dinner at 8:30-10pm. There is afternoon tea at 5-6pm but as of yet we haven’t made it. The food is pretty good, and seems mostly continental with a favouring towards Italian - could that be because most of the guests are Italian? The Italians do a good job of eating! They are like vacuums and eat about 4-5 ladened platefuls of food [View Full Entry]

Can we go and swim yet?

This seems to be coming a habit! The day starts late, followed by a trot over to the breakfast pavilion on the sunset side of the island where today we indulged in a freshly made waffle topped with nutella, a pastry and fresh fruit. Our waffle chef brought us the waffles and then stayed to chat to us about his life working here. He is from Sri Lanka and has been here nearly 5 years. He told us about the Tsunami and how it hit this island. The resort was hit by two waves, the first one was large enough to [View Full Entry]

Exploration day! Well, okay, so we only got as far as exploring the one end of the island, but eventually we will see the whole island at some point. After breakfast we walked up to the sandy bank part of the island, which seemed miles away in the heat, but in fact it was probably just under a mile or about two miles round trip. This didn’t bode too well with Liisa as she added a couple more blisters to the collection on her feet. Along the way we passed the presidential suites which were huge, but we both agreed that [View Full Entry]

Our walk to breakfast
Taxi!
Breakfast area

With hasty goodbyes to Gail’s dad, the taxi took us to Gatwick Airport for the start of our journey to the Maldives. We were flying with Monarch Airlines and after some research online we discovered they were just a glorified sardine tin, so we spent a little extra and upgraded to Premium Class for more legroom and better service. After checking in we hastened to the executive waiting lounge, following our perfume purchases, so we could catch the beginning of the Canadian Grand Prix. Hamilton was in the lead when we had to move along to board the plane, where we [View Full Entry]

First glimpse of the Maldives
Islands
Paradise!

Day 2 on Palm Beach Island started with the promise of sunshine. I awoke early leaving Liisa to snooze away whilst I sat on the deserted beach watching the last of the sunrise with clouds of yesterday dissipating. I was rewarded with the company of a lone heron starring out to sea probably sizing up his next meal for practically a whole hour. The clouds were clearing nicely and the sun was breaking through so we headed to the coffee bar for breakfast around 11ish, which was a typical continental affair of pastries galore, brioche, a selection of waffles, omelette's made [View Full Entry]

Lagoon Bungalow
Utile et agreable

March 11 - 15, 2008 MALDIVES Arrived early in Male, The Maldives and were picked up at the airport by a motor launch from our Resort Hotel for the 20 minute ride out to the Full Moon Resort. WOW !! This is a nice place. Our room is on posts over the lagoon and we literally have snorkeling out the door as we have a short access pool ladder to the lagoon from our patio and from there it is a short swim to a small reef. This is a few days of recharging our personal batteries and we plan to [View Full Entry]
