Our last couple of days in KL were great - we've settled into to the flow but still haven't got our suitcases sorted re living out of them. We need to get into the habit of putting things back into the same spot so we don't have to constantly rummage!
We ended up catching the monorail to the Kampung area of KL, which is dominated by the Petronas Towers but is really just like a country town. The area is home to predominately non migrant Malaysians and is full of the old wooden houses with gardens and chook pens. We didn't stay for the markets but spent a couple of hours wandering and chatting before sitting in an open air eatery and enjoying a range of traditional sweets. Malaysian food areas are set up as buffet style and you help yourself - at the end of the queue you pay piece by piece for what you have chosen. I loved the creme caramel and coconut rice cakes....
That evening when it had cooled down a fraction we decided to head to the Indian markets. China town is bordered by the Indian area which is so much quieter than the Chinese area.
In true traveller style we couldn't actually find the markets or anywhere that seemed remotely busy so headed back to the aircon and a movie on our laptop. Next morning we were up early and arrived at the Butterfly park when it opened. Inside it was cool and peaceful and we spent a happy hour watching the butterflies before catching the shuttle into the park proper where we wandered. There were large groups of children from the local mosque school - typical noisy kids though the groups were well separated - boys being cheeky in one area and the scarved and robed girls shyly talking to us in another area. They all attended the same school and were doing an art assignment - drawing pictures of famous mosques!l By this time the heat had got the better of us and we headed back for our daily nanny naps! Something we are enjoying immensely....
It rained late that afternoon and felt less muggy so determined that Little India wasn't going to beat us headed out again to explore and of course found the markets immeadiately - we had headed in totally the opposite direction the night before (as map reader I
blamed the map of course). The main street was lined with dozens of shops selling glorious bolts of silk and other shops selling nothing else but headscarves and the pretty sparkly pins they us to pin them together. Catching another monorail we headed to Petronas Towers as we wanted to see it lit up. We had a great Indian meal at the food hall in the shopping centre underneath and coffee in the best bookshop I've ever been in before joining the crowds outside to watch the fountains and to admire the gleaming towers.
We woke next morning and spent a quiet morning around the hotel before catching a monorail then bus out to the low cost airport to spend the night at an Air Asia hotel before our 7am departure for Sandakan in Sabah. A good move as it was quite a long drive and would have been a very early start if we hadn't. We paid $4 AUD to stay in the hotel - extra $8 for towel and aircon - very comfortable bed and great power shower the size of a dinner plate but the room consisted of the bed and the shower - there was no
space for us, let alone our luggage. Next morning we left on time for our flight to Sandakan and were impressed with Air Asia - they seemed efficient, the seats were comfortable and as we plan on using them a lot over the next few months were pleased to discover this. We enjoyed KL - it allowed us to get used to travelling and the Asian way of doing things. As with all travel you never know what to expect with your next meal - we had a couple of pretty bad ones but the fresh fruit stands everywhere made up for them and the coffee was great!
