Out of India and into civilisation...phew!!
First 3 days in KL are spent doing city stuff and sorting shit out......and shopping. We headed up the Petronas Towers in the afternoon - having got the tickets at 8am because it's free, the tickets disapear pretty quickly. KL is a very laid back, easy going place we found, everyone is really helpful and the monorail is a wicked way to travel around too - but no day passes which sucked.
Thu 17th is Andrea's 25th Birthday! On the Genting bus, about an hour drive from KL. We go after a nice sleep in, and dunkin dougnuts for breakfast...he he. We go up up up into the misty mountains - on a 3.4km sky rail/gondola to Genting Theme Park (www.genting.com.my/en/themepark/index.htm). Lights lights everywhere! The inside theme park was most impressive, situated inside a shopping complex, it had three coasters hanging up in the air, with A's favourite being Puff the Dragon. Total colourful Crazyness, so sureal - awesome!!!! It was like Rainbows End on Steriods - you needn't have any 'enhancements' at this place.
The outdoor theme park had all the standard rides with go-karting, flume (maintance), roller coasters, spinner, ferris wheel,
tuboggan and candyfloss - oh joy 😊 We tried our hand at archery, which Andrea enjoyed and got two bulls-eyes. And bumped around in the bumper cars. The most awesomest ride of the day was the flying coaster aka Spine Tingler (renamed by Torin). Not sure A has screamed so much and so loud!
After a day full of smiles and laughter we treated ourselves to a foot massage and haircut - nothing like a bit of pampering...lovely.
The morning breakfast was a mass smorgesboard of processed meat and piles and toast and watermelon with 3 areas to serve over 2,000 guests - mental. We saw a big green glowing 'orb' check out the photo we weren't allowed to take! Back to KL to sort out more real world stuff.
Sat morning we head north into the Taman Negara rainforest, taking 8hours to arrive at our destination. We stay at Persona Resort, and have a swing bridge to our residence for 2 nights. Our first night we are treated to a night walk with about 16 other people. The guide, Mr. Herman points out insects, bugs, spiders, stick insects mating (who mate for 2 weeks!), and a tree
snake...we are lucky enough to spot our first scorpian too! Mr Herman showed us the Malay's version of their magic mushroom - glow-in-the-dark mushrooms....COOL!!
The next morning we zoom off on one of the many river boats to the Canopy tree walk which they claimed to be over 500m, but there's platforms joining the swing bridges, so was a bit of a let down. And then up the hill we marched in the humid heat to a view of misty hills - not pictured as it was unexciting. oh well, good exercise apart from Andrea hurting her neck.
After lunch we visited a "local nomadic tribe" just a 2min ride across the river - how convienient. And then we shot some rapids on the way home and got drenched. Andrea was not impressed, but at least she can say she tried it....Torin had a great time!! 😊
We did this tour with Han Travels who provided accommodation, transport, food and tours. Everything was well organised, but really don't expect much from the food - it was like school camp food - fried noodles for breakfast, lunch and dinner.
Onwards towards the tropical paradise which is the Perhenthian
islands - kecil (small is.). We stayed in Buttterfly Chalet at the far end of Coral Bay, basic lodging with an amazing view of the beach, electrical storms and fantastic sunsets! From the sounds of it some of the best acc. on the island, the cheapest too. The highlight of the week spent here was a day out snorkelling with Springroll (our guide) and three French medical students. Millions of little colourful fishes, reef sharks and swimming with giant turtles - holding onto the shell, so cool! PLUS...the baby turtles had been hatching for the last couple of weeks and we got to race them down the beach. Torin's won.
A morning was spent kayaking to Blue Lagoon to do some more snorkelling around the coral forest. We saw moray eels fighting, coral that looked liked brains, hump head fish, thousands of little fish skimming the waters, and a stingray leaping out of the water.
The rest of the week was spent swimming, sunning, eating, drinking, sleeping and reading books....and eating more food at the best cafe - Amelia's Cafe! We manged to find the only bottle of red wine on the island. Good times.
