Malaysia PART 1: Kuala Lumpur Malaysia PART 2: Taman Negara (the jungle) Malaysia PART 3: The islands of the East Coast - Penang and Langkawi Being in Kuala Lumpur was an experience mixed with culture, shopping, craziness, and clubs. We spent each of our 3 days sightseeing and shopping in the afternoons, and partying throughout the nights.
On our first day we bargained our way through Chinatown (Petaling Street) and the Central Market, and accidentally attended some kind of ritual at 'Sri Mahamariamman Temple'. Watching the ritual was fascinating as they chanted over a fire having an offering blessed before setting it aflame. It was interesting to see the role of the wife as she was allowed to circle the temple with her husband during the blessing, but then quickly moved behind the men when it came time to burn the carefully wrapped bundle of bananas and flowers. Times such as this I always wish I had a better understanding of foreign religions.
Following our unidentified spiritual experience Jenna and I returned to our hotel (where the guy from the front desk had given us 1 free night since we
didn't check-in until 4am) to wash off the city dirt before heading to Little India for a delicious dinner of authentic curry and a very special after-dinner-mint which tasted like ground soap rolled in a thick green leaf. (Remembering my manners, I waited until we had left the restaurant and were around the corner before spitting it out and rinsing my mouth 😊 An hour later we sat on the patio of the HRC sipping daiquiris (w/ a hint of soap/leaf) and going over our plan of attack for the 2nd and 3rd day of our Malaysian adventure.
On our second day, Dec. 24th, we woke up at an inhumane hour and headed to the famous Patronas Towers to stand in line for our chance to have the Catherine Zeta Jones "Entrapment" experience of walking across the Skybridge. At 9:15am, after waiting in line for over 2 hours, and befriending a Mexican, Dutch, and American, it was finally time to take the 43 second elevator ride to the 41st floor... where we were then allowed a whole 10 minutes for taking pictures before heading back down. Sarcasm aside, although the wait was long, the experience was pretty cool, and
the early morning was worth it.
Afterwards, Jenna and I attempted the KL bus system, but unfortunately after a 40-minute bus ride, and being "emotionally scarred" by the driver, we ended up within 100 meters of where we had started. Oops! Our next stop (this time in a taxi) was the Chow Kit Market, which is known for selling everything from fruits and veggies to household goods. Unlike Chinatown, there was nothing here that we really wanted to buy, but we did have a blast taking pictures with the guys working the fruit stalls, and sampling many fruit which we had never seen before. The quote of the day came from a guy shouting, "Babies! Babies! You want baby??" Turns out he was selling baby oranges!! LOL, he certainly does have catchy advertising!
Following our "fruity photo shoot" we grabbed a quick lunch of street food and headed back to the Citrus Hotel to grab our bags and move to the Renaissance (our Christmas present to ourselves).
That night we stuffed ourselves at an amazing Christmas Eve dinner buffet before heading to the Sunshine Bar for our Christmas countdown... which somehow turned into a full blown night
out, partying with a group of Malays until 5am!
MERRY CHRISTMAS!!! Apparently not needing sleep, Christmas morning Jenna, Brian (who flew in at 2am), and I woke up at 9:30 to go for a quick swim in the pool before enjoying an amazing Christmas Breakfast in bed... Renaissance style! This breakfast was quite possibly the best breakfast I have ever eaten and was so big that we skipped lunch altogether and ended up eating nothing but street food for dinner. Yum!
Christmas night, our last night in KL, we headed to Bar Street to check out its clubs before deciding on Beach Club for another fun night of dancing and meeting crazy people.
Good times in Kuala Lumpur!!
