At the airport
Fry up and a pint (Naomi)
Hi Everyone!
Don't panic, mums... we are still alive! We arrived in KL after an incredibly long and tiring journey on Thursday morning. After setting out to London on Tuesday afternoon, we were treated to a fab meal and evening with the Jones' which was perfect to see us off on our travels. Up at 5:30am to catch the bus to the airport... it possibly wasn't the best start when we missed our terminal stop and had to get the transfer tube back... but this was soon forgotten about with a fry-up and a pint at the airport.
Flight to Bahrain was long. Flight to KL was even longer, made worse by the child that cried all night meaning we got hardly any sleep! Arrived in KL at 9:40am. Got a taxi to the apartment we're staying in. The apartment is amaaaazing! I had been in touch with Paul over the last week, thanks to a friend who said that he would be happy to help us out at the start of the trip. I don't believe this is representative of what's in store for the rest of our travels because it is absolutely stunning... guarded entrance,
The pet snake
We are sharing our room with the family pet... brave Alex held her while feeble me only managed to touch her! a maid, open plan layout, floor to ceiling windows, air conditioning. We're starting out pretty well! The whole family are lovely and so welcoming. We feel right at home and will be sorry to say goodbye.
Alex and I have been very busy since we've been here. Yesterday morning, Paul and his wife took us for a traditional breakfast at a little curry house where they say they have been going for years. Fantastic flavours and so much food! Then Paul dropped us off at the station and we caught the monorail to Chinatown. We went to the Petaling Street market which is a bustling street of food, clothes and full of the best counterfeit bags, watches, dvds etc you can buy. Everyone is touting for you to buy something. We had a great time wandering up and down - we haggled for a tacky, fake casio for me and each got a nice bag! It's so hot though that we ended up buying some fresh fruit and sat for a little while to watch everyone else go by. We caught the monorail back to the central district and in the evening we walked to Butik Bintang. Just behind
this main street of bars and restaurants, is Jalan Alor which is jam packed with street-food outlets. You could pick any of these for a fab meal but decided on a nice looking Chinese stall.
This morning, we got up super early to get in line at the Petronas towers to go up to the Skybridge. We thought at 8:20am we were making pretty good time but when we got there we were told the tickets had all gone by 7am and that people had been queueing since 2am! So we stood outside and took some nice pictures from the ground! We then got into a taxi and went to the Royal Selangor Pewter Factory and had a tour. Then we got another taxi to the Batu caves where we climbed the 272 steps to get to the top. All the way up the steps monkeys swing from the branches and pull tourists' hair! We are now back at the apartment having just had a swim... did we not mention that there's a pool, gym and sauna here?!
KL is frantic... we are right in the central district and surrounded by skyscrapers. It's strange here though.... despite being
a clean, safe, modern city, you can turn a corner and be on a ripped up pavement, with a street food corner stall and the most horrendous concoction of smells imaginable! It's really fascinating.
Tomorrow is Alex's birthday and we are planning a chilled day. On Monday, we are catching a bus to Singapore. Hope you are all ok back at home, missing you all.
Lots of Love
Naomi and Alex
