Welcome to part 5 of the blog. Apologies for the lack of blogs/contact recently but we have been on perhentian kecil, an island with no roads or cars, where the electricity only runs for 10 hours a day, as im sure you'll understand its been a little difficult getting online. Anyway, when i finished the last blog we were waiting in an internet cafe for a taxi to take us to the bus station, in order to catch the 21:45 coach to kuala besut, the departure point for ferry to the islands. Whilst waiting at said internet cafe we had a slightly scary moment. A guy dressed only in a loin cloth, with his face painted in bizarre patterns, was running up and down the street shouting at passers by. This was all quite funny until ... read more

Day 98 to the Perinthians Got a taxi first thing and managed to share with 2 other girls so was handy, the taxi took us to the Jetty which was at Kuala Besut about an hour away. On arrival here we transferred to a Jet boat and were warned about our back and if we had eaten recently :) Lovely, anyway no need to worry as the seas were very calm and we were there in about 20 minutes. We decided on the smaller island Kecil as it predominately has more budget and available accommodation than it's bigger and more resort style brother Beasar Island. Besar was originally what we wanted but just could not find any decent place to stay so settled with Kecil which also has a younger crowd (so I have heard?). Problem ... read more

So today we were finally leaving Koh Phangan. Great 3 weeks here I have to say and now with a week or so up our sleeves we decided to head to Malaysia and spend some time in the Perenthian Islands! Yes more islands, it is on the same coast as Phangan so supposedly it would be easy to get too and also at this time of year it is HIGH season (even though it is on the same coast though it is some 800kms away. Got another one of these Combo tickets from where we were staying, they promised us we would have no problems. Again however I hate to say it but these combo tickets ending up wasting your time, money and your patience!! The Thai's really seem to want to extract as much money ... read more

I am being followed.... I try to run, but there is no escaping them. I try to ignore them, but they won’t stay in the shadows. In the smoky side-streets of KL’s Chinatown, the corridors of overnight trains, on the beaches of picturesque Malaysian tropical islands they wait for me, ready to pounce... “MY FRIEND, MY FRIEND, YOU WANT INDIAN, MALAYSIAN, CHINESE... ONLY 3 RINGGIT!” They are mobile, organised and hungry. I am only the latter. I try to resist them, fighting back by feigning indifference; but they can see it in my eyes, they sense I am weak, they know I will break... Homer Simpson may have put his hotdog vendor’s children through college, but I have singlehandedly propelled the families of numerous Malaysian street hawkers from the clutches of poverty to the relative comfort ... read more

We departed KL on the 17th June, our destination; perhenthian kecil island. The island is located off the north east coast of Malaysia and is renowned for it's diving and snorkelling.  We took a very fast boat from the mainland and arrived late in the evening looking like we had just had a face lift or a very nasty shock! A Malay guy (on the same boat as us) said he had a chalet goning cheap, it was late so we took him up on it. So following a short walk across a very smelly pond (possibly a cesspit) we arrived at our accomodation or shed on legs. We were greeted by an abundance of Mosquitos and a large lizard, he said nothing about co-habiting! Our first night was not great to be honest we has ... read more

Well its been a whlie since my last blog so thought i would update you as to what i have been upto. As you all know for the last 3 weeks i have been on the perhentian islands, well for the first week and a half i was just doing some fun dives with Sunlight divers whilst i was looking for some DM work in SE Asia. When i was on the perhentians an oppurtunity arose for me to do some free lance DM work for Matahari Divers on long beach, perhentian kecil. this was my first experience of working as a DM in a resort environment as the only other experience i had was whilst i was working for Coral Cay Conservation (which is where i did my DM course). I was diving between 2 ... read more

The thunder reached us at about 1am last night and it was mighty loud. We got up earlyish today, well before 9am ;) I had my usual museli fix and Rob had roti then we walked to Coral Bay on the nicely paved jungle walkway passing another cute secluded empty bay on our way. Coral Bay looked quite nice and the sea there was stunning though as it was more built up and there was some building work going on there it waasn't quite as sweet as our place. It took about 30mins to get there and then a further 10mins to get to Long Beach (this is the length of time it takes to cross from one side of the island to the other!). Long Beach is the busiest place here as it's where most ... read more

So nice not to have to jump out of bed this morning :) Sauntered down to breakfast at about 11ish. I had museli and milk (it had been too long :P) and Rob had banana pancake which Rob said was the best one he'd had so far. We spoke to Lan the owner who said we could get a bus directly from Kuala Besut to KL for 45RM from his travel company which is good news. We walked to the village (30 min walk) passing through another private beach where a Malaysian guy asked us if we'd pose with the two Muslim women he was taking a picture of!? Odd but we agreed, maybe our last chance to be celebs! Though the walk was on a proper pathway through the jungle we still struggled as it ... read more

Got on bus just before 8am - had tons of room and was full of westerners. Stopped at Jurantut so that the Han travel agency here could sell us our ferry tickets (70RM return). Had lunch at a restaurant in Gua Musang -roti with a curry dipping sauce (roti reminds me of sausage roll pastry and is totally delicious though prob has about 30,000cals in it). Changed onto a mini bus here (group split into those going to Cameron Highlands and those going to Perhentians). We had been on the road about 5 1/2hrs before stopping for dinner and we spent another 2 1/2hrs in the mini bus where some guy tried to freeze me to death by insisting the aircon be turned right up and pointed at him who unfortunately was sat right behind me! ... read more
