Ok! Ok! I have to admit it! Ade and I have been comparing different beaches all the time. Sand quality, water quality, animal life, underwater exploration (snorkeling and diving), restaurants, accommodation, etc, etc, etc.
I have to admit that the Perhentian Islands are up there, quite high up. They are not there because the amount of mosquitoes they have (trillions, but what did you expect in the jungle?) or because the choice of restaurants (quite limited) nor either for the cheapness of essentials, RM 3.5 for a bottler of water, meaning more than 50 pence (hey, don't laugh!!! we are on a budget and is bl***y hot in here). So WHY, OH WHY are the Perhentian such high up on the list? Just because they are a beauty. The water is amazing and warm, I have yet to see a swimming pool as clear as that, the sand is white, the islands do not have roads, there is a little path that takes you from one side of the island to the other, and here you can see the wildlife, not only monitor lizards but also many other lizards and insects, lovely butterflies sometimes as big as small bats, you see also eagles and when you are on a boat you can look at the jungle, look at the trees and if you see them moving a lot, watch for the monkeys, they are there showing off!!
The diving in Perhentians is also great, we were diving with Sunlight Divers in Long beach. The staff are great and we had such a great time underwater!! I miss being there right now. I think I'm becoming a fish.
In our last dive yesterday we spotted 6 or 7 triggerfish, that were not aggressive (thank, God!!) but you never know, it felt at one point that we were playing cowboys underwater, the three of us pointing at different directions signaling with our hands as if we had a Magnum .44 (not that cowboys had Magnums .44's though). Anyway for those who don't know, triggerfish, mainly the Titan triggerfish, can be very territorial when nesting and will attack divers, this fishes can measure up to 75 cm and last week in Perhentians a diver needed medical attetion as a trigger bit him on the head. You really need to watch it with this little fellas.
Anyway appart from that lots and lots of
marine life and quite good visibility, except for the Sugar Wreck dive but I didn't mind. We did the wreck dive twice and in both we encountered this cute Batfish that hanged around with us while doind the safety stop. In the first dive on the wreck I was very happy to see it there but on the second dive I thought that maybe he needs friends and he really likes divers, I say this because we had a very strong current, we were grabbing the buoy and were completely horizontal, even with that current the batfish decided to stay with us until we went up to the boat. We now call him "Barry, the Batfish".
We are now back in Kota Bharu, we are taking a train to Singapore to pick Naomi up (Ade's wee sister). We are very excited. I want to take her to the perhentian, I know she would love it!!!
I'll tell you more soon.
- Vida animal acuatica, etc.
