Mount Kinabalu Park Visitors are coming to the flat in Kota Kinabalu from Hong Kong so we plan a trip away. A quick tidy round and we leave by taxi for the bus to Mount Kinabalu Park. The minibus is already full so Carole and I sit in the Wee Lee Coffee House and wait for the bus organiser to fetch us when the next minibus is ready to leave. Breakfast of 2 fried eggs, toast and coconut jam - never quite sure when the next meal will be! Off we go - a full bus with luggage and extra parcels for delivery. A new route into the mountains with very slow traffic up the steep hills. We are tipped out at the Park entrance which is in the middle of nowhere. No where yet to ... read more

I remember signing up for Travelblog with the intention to record my travel to Mountain Kinabalu 2 years back, when I was a 17 year-old teen who was greatly inspired by the bloggers here. Also by that age, I was just a boy who wanted to do things my peers find them challenging. I thought conquering Mountain Kinabalu will somehow make me feel good about myself, at least I will always remember that I was at the top of southeast Asia before turning 20. Let's get back when I was 17, when the dream of conquering the highest mountain in my country begins, I really aspired to climb Mt Kinabalu, I remember telling my classmates about this little dream of mine and how I planned my trip with or without the blessing from my parents. And ... read more

My driver picked me up at 6am to head for the base of the Unesco World heritage site, Mount Kinabalu. I received my name tag and got acquainted with my guide, Claudius. He seemed a little moody but I guess he didn't know much English. We started the climb at 08.45 and climbed 6km (3273m) to Laban Rata where I spent the night with other climbers. It took me 1 hour to get to 3km but then another 3 hours to get to the middle point. Claudius said that 4 hours was good going so I was happy with that and he took a photo of me at every kilometre sign. I had an evening buffet meal and got chatting to Yan and Zoe, a couple living in Scotland but from Yorkshire. Bedtime was at 6pm ... read more

A two hour van ride later, and I'd arrived at Kinabalu National Park, in the cool highlands. Pretty much everyone who comes here, is here for the big guy - Mt Kinabalu, of course. Some are here to climb all 4095.17m of it, some just to hike the many trails of the National Park, which incidentally is over 700 square kilometres, or about the size of my home country Singapore! Several years ago I had the opportunity to plan for a trip to climb the mountain with a couple of friends, but for reasons that I no longer remember, and which were probably meaningless, I ended up not going for the trip. It's not really something that's stuck in my mind, but of course I can't help thinking about it now that I'm here, and still ... read more

I got up early to catch the 8am bus up to the park. I have no delusions about myself and I know I'm not a mountain climber. For me, there is no sunset spectacular enough to make me climb half a mountain one day, sleep overnight on the mountain, and then arise at 230am to finish the climb in time for sunrise. I saw my friend's photos; while they were beautiful, they didn't inspire me that much. We had clear weather all the way up the mountain. That is, until we reached the park. Suddenly, we were in a cloud. A wet, cold cloud. Mind you, my friend had told me that the park would be plenty warm, so I was wearing shorts and a t-shirt. I was freezing. I put on the extra shirt I'd ... read more

Today was a rather massive day...We woke up slightly later than we would have liked this morning and didn’t get on the road till 9am by the time we had breakfast and got the kiddies organised to leave for our drive to Mt Kinabalu. The drive to Mt Kinabalu took about 2 hrs, but somewhere along the way we took a wrong road so it maybe could have taken slightly less time. The drive was nothing like we expected. I expected it to be fairly flat with Mt Kinabalu just sticking up. It wasn’t this way at all. It is very mountainous the whole way. Not easy driving at all. Once at Mt Kinabalu National Park we decided to do the walk up to view the mountain and the waterfall. By the time we got up ... read more

We had read that climbing Mount Kinabalu was easy, compared to the hassle of organising it. Having done both, we have to disagree completely. Despite having to pay a national park fee, a climbing fee, a guide fee, mandatory insurance, a fee for transport within the park, and a fee for mountainside board and lodgings, the pain on the wallet compares not to the pain in the thighs, calves, knees, feet, head and heart. But it was worth it, just about, for the sense of achievement and awe-inspiring views of Borneo at dawn. It’s not the distance travelled, nor the time spent walking that hurts, it’s the height gained. It’s hard to convey just how steep the climb is. Try to imagine walking up a seemingly never-ending staircase for eight or nine hours. For the mathematically ... read more

We kicked the day off with some serious energy food at the resort’s restaurant. Soffia ate more in this one meal than she had in the entire trip so far. I think that the colder weather and yummy toast helped a lot! We all felt a strange mix of anticipated nervousness and excitement all rolled into one. We walked to the beginning of the Mesilau Trail and met our mountain guide Rony. There was just enough time for some ‘pre-climb’ snaps and then we were off into the unknown! Obviously it was tough at times but in general I found it a nice walk. The last bit up to the rest point was steep and Soffia struggled with the effects of altitude sickness. We all made it to Laban Rata well before sunset though which we ... read more

Us girls all agreed that 2 nights at the ‘homestay’ was overkill and we were all happy to move on (Soffia and I were sad to say goodbye to the warm platter of homemade donuts we received each morning for breakfast though). We spent the next 6hrs driving to our next destination- the Poring Thermal Hot Springs and Canopy Walk. It was quite a surprise to us all because we had imagined the hot springs to be ‘natural’ but in reality they are man-made bath tubs where people turn on two taps- hot from the thermal spring and cold from the cooled water supply and have a eggy smelling soak in their swimmers. Naturally enough, we bypassed these and went straight up to the canopy walk. This elevated, tree top walk is gorgeous, albeit scary as ... read more

Malaysia – Kota Kinabalu – Another epic trek with two fellow travellers from……..NORWICH! When I stated in my last blog that normal service had resumed that wasn’t quite the case because things went a bit pear shaped after departing from my parents, I originally headed to the East Coast to a city called Kota Bharu because I was hoping to catch a ferry or maybe a flight to Borneo. Well as it turned out Kota Bharu was very un-interesting and the only sensible priced option to get to Borneo was to fly from Kuala Lumpur, bring on another ten hour bus journey back to KL, mistake number one. Mistake number two was trying to stay in budget accommodation whilst in Kota Bharu, after laying on my bed mid-afternoon for about twenty minutes I was covered in ... read more
