On the way back between Poring and Kota Kinabalu, I stopped off for a few more days at the Mt. Kinabalu National Park. Its good there because there are no leeches or mosquitoes. The only thing that’s of the bitey persuasion are these big horsefly type jobs with a really painful stab. It’s a fly of such a size that you can actually see it preparing its proboscis as it readies itself to jab you. They usually come in ones or twos so technically shouldn’t be as much of a problem as mosquitoes but I found them much worse because of their tenacity. Once they have you in their sights then there’s no escape. I became quite proficient at snatching them out of the air on their approach and crunching the life out of them. In ... read more

Tuesday 1st September 2009 cont. We left the Uncle Tan Adventure Camp at 10am on day three of the 3D/2N trip. So as you can see, its not really a three day jungle adventure! A quick ride up the river brought us back to the jetty where we were met by some 4WD utes, rather than the minibuses that we came in. A much better ride through the plantations, then we transferred to minibuses at the road. We had lunch at the operations base near Sepilok then walked to the main road to wait for the express bus towards KK. Luckily we were only going as far as Ranau, rather than all the way to KK. The air-con was on full blast and the movies were bad! So it was scenery watching as we wound our ... read more

Because Borneo is so full of tourists it seemed best to do the thing that I don’t like doing, and arrange all my accommodations in Sabah in advance. So I booked myself stupid to make sure of getting to the places I wanted to get to, and got four nights at Mt. Kinabalu National Park, then five nights at the Danum Valley Field Centre, followed by two nights at the Kinabatangan River, two nights at Sepilok and two nights at Poring Hot Springs. There really are a lot of tourists on this island, and all the tourists themselves seem surprised at this. Think “Borneo” and you think untrammelled rainforest, not tourist crowds, but its just one big intermeshed web of tourist routes. Monday, May 25th Veels geluk met moemie se verjaarsdag! Hoop ma geniet ma se verjaarsdag video boodskap. Summit morning. We slept pretty well but for some reason our alarm didn't go off at 01:30. Luckily the Polish couple we shared a room with had an alarm. We got up and went down for the first breakfast of the morning and by 02:30 we started our climb. We had to battle our way through clusters of really slow moving people. We couldn't get a proper rhythm with them stopping every second step. After an hour we had no one immediately ahead of us and we made good time. We chatted away and really enjoyed the night climbing. Sections of the trail were very steep and we had to use the provided ropes. Nordin, of course, walked up ... read more

Sunday, May 24th We shared a nice big breakfast with our Dutch friends then went to meet our guide Nordin. At 8:30 we set of by bus (it cost extra of course) for the 4.2km to Timpohon Gate, the start of the route. Our climb started at 8:50. We only had to hike 6km today. The first 200m is downhill to Carson waterfall (small) but after that it's uphill all the way. After all the rain last night we expected a muddy mess but the trail was mostly steps that drained the water well. We made good progress and it wasn't too hot. At our first rest spot we spotted a small, jumpy squirrel. Soon there was a whole troop of them running, jumping and climbing trees. They were so cute and came right up to ... read more

Don't believe the travel agencies that tell you that you must have booked 6 months in advance to climb Mt. Kinabalu, we did it in just a few days. The key is to book your overpriced accommodation with Sutera Sanctuary Lodges (the company that has the monopoly on accommodation on the mountain) directly. Everything else can be arranged the morning of your hike at the Park HQ. Our good friend Laura who we were happy to be hangin around with because of her witty demeanor who went well with our smart alec comments laid out the pros and cons of climbing the mountain. Eventually I caved. Mazi held the fort at Rose Cabins and enjoyed the surroundings at base camp. She joined some interpretive hikes at the Park HQ and chatted with some fellow travellers. She ... read more

Day 283: Wednesday 8th April - The first of many steps up Mount Kinabalu When you’re climbing a mountain tomorrow, a fairly substantial one at that, one recommendation would be to get an early night. I was about to follow my own advice when I ended up talking to a South African, Steve until the early hours in my hostel last night. Sometimes it pays to not take the sensible option. Although I only talked to Steve for a matter of a couple of hours, I felt so comfortable in his company that I told him about my incident in Kuala Lumpur. It’s a story alright, but until now I have shared it with just a few select people, all friends or family, no strangers. But, do you know what, it felt good getting it off ... read more

28th March 2009 Today we were moving on to Mt Kinabalu National Park. We can’t climb the mountain unfortunately as it’s completely booked up and has been for a while, it’s also expensive, about a hundred pounds each which for one day's expenditure is just out of the question on our budget. We’re obviously disappointed but what can you do. We pack our bags, say goodbye to our hostess and go for a breakfast of coffee, toast and a cheese slice omelette, god how I miss real cheese. Not one of the countries we’ve visited has any idea about dairy products. After filling our stomach we negotiate a shared mini bus back to Ranau where we stop to get cash and then another taxi to the National Park, we finally arrive at about 2:30pm. We get ... read more
