After a 2 hr flight we leave Kuala Lumpur and arrive in Kota Kinabulu, Borneo. After three attempts at finding a place to stay and a blood filled tick experience we have booked a week at a nice hotel just out of tuoristville so things are cheaper and more local.
The main reason we came to Kota Kinabulu was to do our open water diving course. So we popped into Sabah divers and booked the three day course. Day one was pure theory for 7hrs in classroom environment but we got through it knowing that diving was soon to come unfortunatly liam had come down with a killer head cold, and was told diving with sinus problems could be dangerous so he was told to fill himself with as much cold and flu medicine he could get his hands on… Day two we head to the dive shop and take a boat to TAR Marine Park to get started on our skills. Riki had noticed that she was coughing up a bit of blood during the diving so our dive instructor said I should go to clinic and get checked out and if I had the all clear I could
continue diving so I left liam on the boat to continue the course and took an awesome speed boat ride back to town and went to the clinic, everything was fine just a small infection that caused a few blood vessels to break due to the pressure of diving, but since being in Asian country and their love for antibiotics I received a lovely injection in a not so lovely place, you can guess where that was. So to the relief of everyone the following day I went to finish the course and thanks to our awesome dive instructor he did some one on one catch up with me so I could finish the course with everyone else. We all went out for celebratory drinks afterwards.
We had heard about a revolving restaurant and bar just out of town to we hopped in a taxi and went off to atmosphere. We definitely felt out of our league their everything was so plush and fancy and the bar actually turned around which did our heads in a bit until we got used to it. We had lots and lots of cocktails which riki was very pleased about as we had
been drinking mostly beer until now. After an alcohol fuelled fun filled evening we headed back to our hotel.
So besides diving we really haven’t been doing much in KK just taking it easy, drinking slightly cheaper booze and enjoying the sunshine and bizarre arcade centers hidden at the top of shopping centers to all hours of the evening with everything from individual karaoke booths, old school video games and mini air hockey.
On our last day we headed to an orangutan orphanage situated in a national park connected to a very fancy resort. The orangutans were gorgeous and they got so close to us, it was wonderful to see them in a natural environment rather then enclosed in an zoo, Really was a wonderful experience and to make the experience better we decided to hang around the resort for a while and use their facilities. They had a massive pool, private beach and people to cater to our every need. It really was the best day of the holiday so far, we realized our holiday had been lacking some pool relaxation, so after Borneo we are going to head to the Thai islands for a week or
so before we go to Bangkok and head north.
Tomorrow we will experience our first long distance bus to Kinabulu national park.
Lots of love and hugs
Riki and Liam
