A few months ago I took my first trip to Cherating and befriended an Australian on extended holiday. He stayed longer than I did, left, and has now returned for a few more weeks. Of course, I jumped at the chance to see him and catch up. And really, how can you go wrong with a beautiful beach nearby? As an added bonus, my friend had spent a lot of time in Cherating, which means he knows everyone. Which means that in a short time, I would too. I arrived Friday evening just before dinner. We went to have some drinks with an ocean view before heading to my favorite ikan bakar restaurant. But they were out of prawns so I ended up with an omelet instead. Luckily, that was the only disappointment of the weekend. ... read more

I've been driving for about twenty years and I've been fortunate enough to only have had one minor fender bender back in my 20s. I've been in a few others (where I wasn't the driver) but none of the were anything serious. And certainly, none of them really scared me. Until today. I was driving home from work on my usual two land highway. It was a beautiful sunny day and quite warm. Suddenly, up ahead, I heard a loud exploding noise. In the oncoming traffic lane was a large lorry truck. Then, seemingly in slow motion, I saw a lorry tire flying across my lane. Right at me. I saw it coming, closer and closer. It seemed really big. My first instinct was to avoid it at all costs. My second instinct was to check ... read more

I love getting email. Well, I love getting emails with news, stories, or a friendly hello. When I saw that I had an email from my friend Candy I was pretty excited. Candy had been one of my closest friends when I lived in Shenzhen and the last time we saw each other was when I traveled to Xi'an in 2012. Candy had written me a short email that can be summed up with, "I'm coming to visit you! I arrive in KL Sunday. I can't wait to see you!" My excitement turned to panic as I realized that Sunday was 3 days away and I had plans to be out of town all weekend! (As luck would have it, I had a speech contest in KL.) When would I prepare or clean? Sufficed to say, ... read more

Coming from a country that drinks copious amounts of tea, the Cameron Highlands was a place we had to visit. Known for its beautiful mountain scenery and the many tea and strawberry plantations, we knew it was going to be a little heaven for us. Getting there from Penang was straightforward as we opted for the tourist minibus taking 6 hours(43 ringgit each). The closer we got to the Cameroon Highlands the more we had mixed feelings on the scenery. Don't get us wrong there were many moments where we were wowed. We were simply blown away by the lush greenery covering the mountains with many towering peaks all sat together in a rugged manner. However, another thing that also caught our attention was sadly the amount of mining and the consequence of deforestation that was ... read more

I love hiking. I love getting out there, seeing new things, new sounds, new smells, and learning along the way. When I read that a hike was offered through my guest house I thought it sounded like a great idea. An easy hike up to the top, followed by a hike down into the valley, ending at a tea plantation. About five hours. It sounded relaxing and beautiful. Only the latter was true. To be fair, I haven't gone hiking in a few years. And I've been doing a LOT of driving since moving here. But even then, my definition of hiking doesn't involve the regular use of my hands to stay upright. We started out walking toward the hill we'd climb. It was a beautiful area and our guide was really knowledgable about the plants ... read more

There are several tours offered in Cameron Highlands. Since I was only visiting for two full days and wanted to see everything, I decided an all day, "see everything here" tour was just the thing. I was right. Well, mostly right. The day started out a bit chilly as we all piled into the Land Rover. We drove through a tea plantation (and took early morning photos) before following a narrow, winding road up to the top of the highest peak in Malaysia. We saw several cars driven by drivers not used to the terrain and it made me thankful I'd hired someone with lots of experience and a proper vehicle. (Later, driving out from the plantation, along a windy road barely wide enough for two cars, with no guard rails along the cliffs, I was ... read more

Had an early start today with alarm going off at 07.30 - not sure how easy its going to be returning to work with 04.30 starts! Anyway, got picked up at 08.45 by a friendly tour guide in an old faithfull land rover that was gonna be our transport for the day. One man from Rotterdam, Yoko from Japan and a couple from India joined me - and off we went. The first stop was to a tea plantation, to have a short talk and take some pictures. The plantation was vast with pictures not really doing it justice, with the tea trees flourishing in the most acute of angles - down valleys and up and over ridges. It really was fascinating to see. Next stop was up to the highest peak in the highlands - ... read more

We left Melaka before 8 am on Sunday morning because we did not want to get caught in the heavy Chinese New Year traffic again since we had a 360 km drive in front of us. Things went smoothly and we passed KL in no time. The last hour towards Tanah Rata in Cameron Highlands, where we were going to stay for two nights, took us along a small, winding road, surrounded by forest. We slowly climbed up to 1,400 metres of altitude and checked into our Bed and Breakfast at around 2 pm. The owner, Jay, was just fantastic. She advised us to go to a tea plantation on the very afternoon because apparently the tea plantations in the area are closed on Mondays. She recommended a jungle walk and a fantastic Indian restaurant to ... read more

With Chinese New Year fast approaching, my friends in China have long holidays. One of them decided to take a few days of her holiday to stop and visit me! I haven't seen her since we both left the university in China in June 2013, so we were long overdue for a meeting! I picked her up at KLIA on Thursday. Thanks to traffic and an accident, it took me over five hours to get there. But, unlike everyone had predicted (based on their own experiences), I didn't get lost! Unfortunately, the sign for the airport parking was rather unclear (I thought it was parking for the hotel next to the airport), so I illegally parked like everyone else. I think the ticket cop was waiting for me. But we were on our way again and ... read more

Hi People, So today we have arrived in Malaysia, it was the easiest border crossing so far which was amazing. Our bus from Singapore to Malaysia was really comfy as there were only 9 people on a 32 person coach it meant everyone had loads of room and your could recline without guilt!!! I could not sleep thanks to the coach being freezing and I was only wearing shorts and T-shirt, some how I awoke to find Vick snuggled up in a sleeping bag so she was ok and kept warm. We arrived in the Cameron Highlands about 8am however after dropping people off and winding through the jungle roads we finally got to our hostel 'Father house Inn'. It was a large house building and was busy inside and out on arrival. As we got ... read more
