Edit Blog Post
Well everyone this is my last blog, thank you very much for joining me on my journey for the last 6 months, it has been brilliant receiving all your comments and feedback.
Since leaving the Philippines and encountering a minor problem at Manila airport (them telling me I’m not booked on the flight and my ticket is invalid!), I spent a couple of days in Singapore sorting out what I was going to do for the next 10 days. I eventually decided on heading north on a train to Kula Lumpar.
My plan was pretty flexible so on the advice of two Canadian backpackers I met on the train, I ended up staying in what turns out to be one of my favourite hostels. It was small but in a great location and everyone there was so nice and the food from the hawker stalls nearby was fantastic. The 1st evening I went and visited the famous Petronas Towers with a couple of friends I met. We watched the sun go down and the lights come on before heading off for a beer. It was then time to head back to the hostel for some warm up drinks before
seeing what KL night life has to offer!
Day 2 of Malaysia was spent having a nice lye in before sorting out a coach ticket to go north to Cameron Highlands as well as checking out KL's lake gardens and Merdaka square. That evening we celebrated the birthday of Irene (1 of a group of 3 wicked girls I met in KL), so a big group of us from the hostel went out for food before pre drinks and off to an expensive club! (All clubs in Asia seem to be expensive!). The following day we were all heading in different directions, some south to Singapore or Melaka and me north to the tea region.
It took 4 1/2hrs and only cost 4 pounds and the coach was 1st class luxury. Once I got there i just checked out the local town of Tanah Rata and organised a trip to the tea plantations and a trek for the next day. The trip also had a walk to a waterfall for a swim, as well as seeing the world’s biggest flower, trying a blow dart, a visit to a strawberry farm and a butterfly farm.
This was an
action packed day which deserved a good feed, so I went to a local hawker (cheap food hall...kind of..) and got a fantastic banana leaf (meat curry, 3 veg curry's, 2 popadom's, lots of rice, 2 sauces and a doughnut thing served on a banana leaf) all for just £1.20, amazing! However after only 2 nights I decided to leave and head back to KL to get a connecting bus down to Melaka, which is an old town further south.
Melaka is a cultural town with a history of Portuguese, Dutch as well as Chinese. Due to it being big on culture there isn't a whole lot to do apart from take life easy and walk around admiring the different cultures and its history. It is unquestionable in my mind that the best thing about Malaysia is the food, the variety and flavours are fantastic not to mention it will set you back not much more than £1.50 with a drink! I'm not sure I can have a curry back home again as it will never live up to the 'tandori plate' in KL or the 'banana leaf' in the Cameron Highlands!
I'm now back in Singapore for a
few days before flying home on Saturday night. Aaron an I met up with the girls from KL for a big night out in Clarks Quay and we ended up going to a club which for once was full of girls instead of full of men like every where else in the world. There was still one more thing for me to do before leaving S'pore and that was to visit the Zoo but unfortunately Aaron had to work (looser) and the rest of us went to the Zoo which was probably the best I’ve been too, with loads of my old friends I’d seen in the Kruger in South Africa like the Lions, elephants and zebra.
Well it's about 24hrs before I start heading to the airport and make my final journey of this fantastic chapter of my life. I have had a fantastic experience growing as a person in both confidence and ambition as well as learning who I am.
Who knows what the future holds and where it will be........
Look forward to seeing you all very soon, lots of love Tom xxx
Over and Out!
