Slept very well last night. Had considered not setting my alarm, but glad I did. I got up and got myself ready and went in search of breakfast. I ended up getting some noodles and apple juice (it was in a can but had bits of small apple chunks in it which somehow made it better) from a place a few doors down. All for just $1USD! The tour guide met me and three other guests at our hotel and I followed them u to the tour drop-off point so I could have my car after.
I spent the morning on a Mangrove Tour. Excellent. Mangroves are trees unique to areas where sea/ocean and fresh water converge. They are also home to many different kinds of wildlife. We saw monkeys, eagles, a snake, birds, sea otters, lizards and bats! The boat captain and tour guide were amazing at spotting the animals. Our tour guide was very knowledgeable and nice and gave us a lot of interesting information about where we were and what we were seeing (the tour was in English). There was about nine of us on the tour total, so it was a good sized group for this
type of thing. The tour was about four and half hours and we got off at a fish farm area and the bat cave area. We also spent about a half hour and a beach where they filmed a show called “Robinson Crusoe Adventure.” Apparently it was a show in the Netherlands. We then had a really yummy full lunch on a floating restaurant. I really enjoyed this tour—it made me want to be a nature tour guide.
After the tour I went all the way across the island to ride the cable cars. Do a google search for Langkawi cable cars. It was not for the faint of heart. Or the weak of heart. Basically, if you have a heart problem, do not do this. It was so steep! It was a bit overcast, but the view was great—you could see almost the whole Island. On a clear day you can even see Thailand! I enjoyed this.
After the cable cars I decided to go see the Falls that were nearby. I did not enjoy this—actually, it was memorable so probably worth it. I walked to the top of the falls which were extremely subpar to the
Island
The water was so warm... middle falls and it was a hard hike up. I hiked down and went to the middle falls which were very nice. I started to walk back and there were monkeys on the stairs---five on the stairs, a few nearby. No big deal since these were the 1000th monkeys I’ve seen. Well they weren’t moving so I picked up a stick (about the height of me, maybe 6lbs). The on the stairs monkey started staring at me, but wouldn’t move. I threw the stick down just right in front of me to get them to scatter. The others moved (trauma has erased this part out!) but I think the monkey on the stairs moved out of the way. I had no choice to leave and I started walking to and up the stairs. She/he hissed at me! I had made it about two feet away from her up the stairs and she hissed!! It was scary so I started to run. Luckily she didn’t run after me. Lesson learned: don’t try to scare the monkeys. I hope I didn’t ruin this tourist spot for the rest of mankind due to a sudden aggressiveness in monkeys after my visit. I don’t
think so though…google search monkey attach Malaysia. Really though, I am and was at the time just fine.
Drove back to the hotel missed my turn but ended up only about a mile down the road at the local mall. I decided to take a look. Different but the same as the US malls. Wanting to really live authentically I decided to have an authentic mall meal. I ended up having a waffle and yam bubble tea (my juice of choice for the night). Apparently yams here are purple! Both were quite good.
In my room, packed up and ready for bed. Going to get up at 7 tomorrow to return the car and head out on the 8:30 shuttle for Penang.
