Colonized by the Portuguese in the 16th century, Macau was the first European settlement in the Far East. Pursuant to an agreement signed by China and Portugal on 13 April 1987, Macau became the Macau Special Administrative Region (SAR) of China on 20 December 1999. China has promised that, under its "one country, two systems" formula, China's socialist economic system will not be practiced in Macau, and that Macau will enjoy a high degree of autonomy in all matters except foreign and defense affairs for the next 50 years. To be updated

Macau is really great! There is loads of Portugese arcitecture and churches and then at night you can visit the Las Vegas style casinos! We had loads of fun making 2 pounds last 2 evenings in the slot machines drinking the free tea and coffee! The weather was appauling, it was chucking it down everyday and most of the streets were flooded. Appart from the taxi drivers we really had a great time here and can really recommend a visit. (taxi drivers keep driving round the block and think you wont notice even though you are still outside the casino where [View Full Entry]

In Hong Kong we for once had accommodation booked already - to satisfy tighter visa requirements brought on by the proximity of the Beijing Olympics. Cleverly I had written down directions but not the actual address, which was most definitely not sufficient! Having eventually found internet terminals (in the library) to attain the address, we resumed our search but had little more luck. It was, in all, a stressful couple of hours before we finally located our tiny Inn high in a dilapidated building, overlooking the Causeway Bay shopping district. Even then, the Inn turned out to be full and th [View Full Entry]

I decided today to hit Macau, which is a territory just about 45 miles outside of Hong Kong. It used to be controlled by the Portuguese as a colony, but now it is back in the hands of the Chinese. Its world famous as the Las Vegas of Asia and recently as the gambling town that out grossed Las Vegas for profits. As my brother quoted: it is like Vegas without the shows, attractions and other family junk. It is just straight serious gambling. So I took the Turbo Jet from Kowloon which took about 50 minutes and was quite [View Full Entry]

This morning we woke up got ready then headed down to the hotel restaurant for some breakfast. It was a huge buffet with all sorts of Asian foods, most of which Hannah and I wouldn't eat. We found some cereal and bread, ate breakfast then headed to reception to take the free shuttle bus to the Ferry Terminal on Macau Peninsula. We waited for a while but eventually the bus came and we were taken across to Central Macau. It was quite easy to get around in Macau because most of the casinos offered free bus shuttle to and from their [View Full Entry]

We woke up today and packed up our stuff ready to head down to reception and take a taxi to Bangkok airport. We arrived at the airport and checked in our luggage then went to a café upstairs and played cards while we waited for our flight to Macau. It was a short flight and we arrived at the tiny airport in the middle of the afternoon. After we cleared immigration we started to look for the best way to get to our hotel, the Grand Waldo on Tapai Island. To our pleasant surprise it was the closest hotel to the [View Full Entry]

Macau We travelled to Macau by Hydrofoil from HK which took about an hour and a half. To get tickets (HK$148) you need to go to the China Ferry Terminal on Canton Rd in Kowloon where they take cash or card, preferably the day before - they go every half hour but a few were already full. Large bags can be checked for an extra HK$75 or you can save the money and take them on. Sailing over was quite choppy and the hydrofoil almost took flight on a couple of occasions but we eventually arrived in one piece to a [View Full Entry]

Loise and I have heard so many positive things about Macau, so we decided to visit the place. We thought that this could also be the perfect opportunity for David to re-visit Disneyland as he was only a year old when we went to Orlando's Disney world. We took a one-way flight to Macau via Tiger Airways, then eventually took the Turbo jet to Hong Kong. Our return flight was via Cebu Pacific from Hong Kong to Manila. We started our Macau exploration by having our own walking tour starting from Largo De Senado to the Ruins of St. Paul. From [View Full Entry]

[View Full Entry]

Macau Getting from Kuala Lumpur to Macau was pretty easy, involving a monorail, train, airplane, and two bus rides over 8 hours. Macau is our first experience with one of China's "special administrative regions" (the other being Hong Kong). Macau is listed as the world's most densely populated region at 18,428 people per square kilometre! In contrast Canada's population density is about 3.5 people per square kilometre! Macau is a strange place, and it seems to have 3 faces: Portugese colony, Chinese Island, and Casino hotspot. It's [View Full Entry]
