We woke up at 6 to get our 10 hour bus to Vientiane. The journey was fairly smooth and we got there at 5.30. We had dinner in a little hut place by the station. Then we waited until 8.30 to get our connecting sleeper bus to 4000 islands. The bus had 'double beds' so Iona and I shared and Charlotte was with a random girl. It was pretty cramped so I was glad I was with someone I knew! We slept the whole time and woke up at 8 the following morning.
We got off the bus and from here had a 3 hour bus to the edge of a town so we could get a boat over to Don Det, one of the islands. We walked around and found a hostel that was a bit hippyish but cool. We felt a bit gross after travelling for 30+ hours!! The showers were cold- not ideal!- and after we went for lunch by the river. We wandered through the small town before getting ice cream and finding somewhere that showed friends- we were to exhausted to do anything else! There was a sweet girl there who was dancing around and chatting
to us. In the evening we got changed and went to 4000 island bar. The woman who worked there was lovely and her daughter, Hasein, was adorable. She wanted to sit and play with us so we did. We had a few drinks In the bar before heading home.
The next day the weather wasn't great and Iona wasn't well. Charlotte and I went out and got breakfast and wandered around a bit before of course watching friends! There is only one main trip to do from the island so we booked if for the next day. The islands are known as a place to chill out and recover so there isn't much to do which is nice really! We went for dinner at 4000 islands again and Hasien roped us in to playing more games with her haha
The next morning we had our kayaking tour. We had a free breakfast before heading out with Si out leader. Iona and I were partners- not exactly a dream team for kayaking but we got there in the end. It was lots of fun but the river is quite fast and us and another two girls or swept into some bushes
at one point which was hilarious! We went down some 'rapids' and then stopped at a bank and walked to a small 'waterfall' which were more like rapids! Then we kayaked over to the Cambodian side of the river for lunch. On the way we stopped to look out for Irrawaddy dolphins- we saw about 5 which was cool! Our arms were aching a lot by this point. The lunch was cooked by Si and was a chicken and veg kebab with mash(!) and coleslaw. It was really nice. After we kayaked back over to the Laos side of the river and got in a truck to drive to a big waterfall. It was big but it looks strange because the water is so brown! After that we drove to another point and got back in the water. Si joined our team because by this point my weedy arms had basically given up working!! So I pretended to paddle while Si did the hard work haha when we got back we showered and went for food. We had promised to stop by and see Hasien before we left the following morning so we went in and played with her for
a bit.
The next morning I left first so said my goodbyes to the girls which was sad after travelling with them for a while now! I got a bus to the Cambodian border and the visa process was relatively simple! I had two seats so slept until the road got so bumpy that I couldn't! At one point the bus was filling with smoke so the guy opened the windows and we got covered in a delightful layer of dust- travelling definitely isn't always amazing haha we arrived in Phnom Penh, Cambodia at 8.30 after seemingly getting lost at one point! I got a tuk tuk with 3 others to my hostel, mad monkey, and showered and ate before getting an early ish night- my room was right next to bar so it was lucky I was tired!
I couldn't really do much the next day as I was waiting for Anna to arrive in a few days and didn't want to do all the sights twice! So I made a plan for a trip and got some Info and prices sorted. I found a really nice salad bar to have lunch. After I was back in my room
and got chatting to 3 guys there, 1 of which turns out went tony primary school but was 6 years behind me so was in reception while I was in year 6! So weird. We all decided to go out in the evening so went to the bar and a nightclub which was fun.
The next day I was not feeling too fresh so went for a nice and cultural dominos pizza! Then I went to costa and had an amazing caramel shortbread drink and read my book. In the evening I went for a massage which was nice and then had dinner before getting an early night ready for Anna's arrival tomorrow!!! 😊
