After getting wet over Songkran in Bangkok we took an overnight bus North and crossed the friendship bridge into Laos and headed into the capital Vientiene. For a capital city there were almost no tall buildings and very few people so we decided to spend only one night here. After something quick to eat we enjoyed a day walking around seeing what sights there were to be seen including an Asian virsion of an Arc de Triomphe!
We took a bus to Vang Vieng which has become famous because of the cluster of bars that line a part of the river that you float down in a tube while bar hopping (of course we were coming here). We booked a trip to the elephant cave, where we sat in a tube and pulled ourselves by a rope through the cave 500 metres under one of the mountains that surrounded Vang Vieng. This was brilliant fun, the water was so cold but completly clear. Then we kayaked down the river for 8 km back to the village. Our first attempt down some small rappids, we got the kayak stuck on a rock and were then rammed by another two kayaks to
the back of us, we did feel a little bad when one of them flipped and dropped the chinese couple into the river, it was a little funny though and we did laugh. The next day we met up with some of the girls that we did the trip with and hired a tube and headed to the bars. The bars were great and Matt took full advantage of the swings and slides in each of the different bars but the fun part was tubing down the river from one bar to the other, the bars would throw a rope out to you and then pull you in when you wanted to stop for a drink. It took us 6 hours to get to the half way point where a group of six of us decided to take a tuk tuk back into town.
The next day we jumped on the bus again and headed to Luang Prubang. In our guide book it says that Luang Prabang is the most photogenic place in the whole of South-east Asia, we would both love to know where they were looking when they made that conclusion! A pretty little place but not
even in our top 10 places in South-east Asia to visit never mind photograph. We took a trip to the Kuang Si Falls which were completely out of this world with crystal clear water and a beautiful aqua colour. You could go swimming in the pools of the freezing cold water and swim under the waterfall. There is also a bear rescue centre at there. Other then the waterfalls we didn't do anything in Luang Prabang, we thought that Laos was going to be the cheapest country that we were going to visit but this wasn't the case at all, infact we were able to get cheaper food when we were in America.
Sending Love
Matt and Kerry
