Thakhek has the crumbling, former colonial, 3rd world, atmosphere of an oriental Havana-on-the-Mekong. There were other forigners staying at the Thakhek travel lodge, but walking around town, we are definatly a point of attention, & have the feeling that people here do not see alot of forigners. This afternoon, we decide to walk to the river. On the way we meet our friend, that we met at the park outside the sitting-and-flirting cave. He is a college administrator here. He reminds us to stay by the river to catch the sunset. Seeing how much we loved the sunsets in Vientiane, we take his advice, & drink tea & eat pho (noodle soup) at a riverside stand until dark....

This is where we bought our "pho". It was the best I tasted on the whole trip. We ate it across the street at tables by the river.

this was a common sight. Also common was seeing whole families on one scooter. Most I saw was 6 people on a scooter
