Savanaketh
All you need in SavanakethWhat a great week! The south of Laos did not disappoint at all and we really loved what we experienced here.
From Tha Kaek we headed south to Savannahket, but just for a day. Nice little, very sleepy town. Our highlight were the monks in the garden of the monastery belonging to Wat Sainyaphum, who wanted to practice their English with us. They were most intested in how much our journey to Laos would cost and when we told them (already dramatically understated) they could not believe that one person could have so much money. Here we should mention that a simple dinner here costs around 2-3 pounds for both of us. It is actually difficult to spend more... We recognised that people got more and more happy to see us (tourists) the further south we got. Wherever we came the kids greeted us with huge smiles and a shy or giggly 'sabaide' (means 'hello' in Lao) and many adults, too.
The next day we took the bus to Pakse, which should be our base for the next week or so. Pakse is almost as sleepy as Tha Keak and Savannhket. But it has a few nice restaurants, two

The old colonial buildings give Savanaketh a charmful flair ... big markets with food and all sorts of stuff and a couple of nice guesthouses. We hired a little motorbike and decided to go for a 3-day roundtour to the Bolaven Plateau (mountains but not very high) just east of Pakse. Here you can visit a couple of waterfalls, sleepy villages and the coffee plantations of the famous Lao Coffee (which is delicious and served with sweet condensed milk). The tour was great and with our own vehicle we were much more flexible to go where we wanted to go and not were the public bus would take us. The first night we stayed in Tad Lo, which is known for its waterfalls coming down around the village. We had a nice guesthouse and the the evening we spend having a goat barbeque with the guesthouse family and the other guests from around the world. The evening was good fun with live music on the guitar, beer lao, smoking the bamboo pipe and unidentifiable pieces from the goat on the barbeque.
The next day we continued our round trip on the plateau. The landscape was beautiful and we went for a walk in a really remote village just off

.... with hardly anyone on the streets - this was really busy - a city which sleeps the dirt road we were riding along. Within a minute all the kids from the village followed us on our walk. You could see the couriosity in their eyes but at the same time they were so shy. Before we left Martin asked the oldest (or at least tallest) in the group if we were allowed to take a photo and then we understood - this is what they were waiting for! As soon as he took the camera out of his pocket they grouped together for the photo, which you can view attached. We finished the day in Champasak suoth of Pakse, where we wanted to visit the ruins of Wat Phu in the early morning before returning to Pakse. To get there we had to cross the Mekong by ferry - or the Lao version of a ferry. Another adventure on the trip - look at the pictures. However, the evening on the veranda overlooking the sunset on the Mekong was gorgeous. The site of Wat Phu was beautiful in the morning hours. We arrived at around 7 and the air was still cool and the light was great for photos.
The next destination from Pakse was
Bolavan Plateau
On our little scooter on the way to the plateau Don Det in the area of the Si Pan Don - 4000 little to tiny islands in the Mekong close to the Cambodian border. We got there in the late afternoon with the bus from Pakse after we had finished our motorbike trip. Unfortunately we got there so late that most bungalows were already fully booked and we had to stay in a really crappy hut full of spiders and moskitos before we could move as soon as the first travellers left the island the next morning. Once you got there on your longboat there is not much you can do on Don Det apart from relaxing in your hamock on the Mekong or hire a bicycle and cruise across the island and the neighbouring island Don Kon connected by bridge. This is exactly what we did and we had three very relaxing and laid back days here enjoying doing nothing and the great food and fruit shakes of our lovely guesthouse 'mama' - a funny lady who keeps on talking to you in a mixture of Lao (98%) and English (2%) throwing in some giggles after each sentence (and nobody knows why). Whoever goes to Don Det should stay
Bolavan Plateau
Tat.......... our first stop on the Bolavan Plateau - peaceful, quiet and relaxed until the first buses from Pakse arrived in Mama Say's guesthouse - you will have great fun. We came back to Pakse today and tomorrow we will contonue our trip hopping into Cambodia, where we will spend the last 6 days of our trip.
Wir hatten eine tolle letzte Woche. Der Sueden Laos' hat uns keine Minute enttaeuscht und wir haben die Zeit und Sonne hier sehr genossen.
Von Tha Kaek sind wir mit dem Bus weiter Richtung Sueden nach Savannakhet gefahren, aber nur fuer eine Nacht. Eine suesse, sehr verschlafenen Kleinstadt. Unser Highlight waren die Moenche im Klostergarten des Sainyaphum Tempel, die mit uns ihr Englisch trainieren wollten. Am meisten hat sie interessiert, was unsere Reise nach Laos kosten wird. Als wir ihnen eine Zahl nannten (die wir schon masslos von der Realitaet untertrieben), konnten sie nicht glauben, dass ein Mensch soviel Geld haben kann. Hier sollten wir erwaehnen, dass wir fuer ein einfaches Abendessen ungefaehr 3-4 Euro fuer uns beide ausgeben. Mehr kann man gar nicht ausgeben...Je weiter wir nach Sueden kamen desto mehr willkommen haben wir uns in Laos gefuehlt. Wo auch immer wir hinkamen haben uns die Kids mit einem breiten Laecheln und einem scheuen oder kicherenden 'Sabaide' (heisst

Am neachsten Tag haben wir den Bus nach Pakse genommen, was dann auch unsere Basis fuer die kommende Woche gedient hat. Pakse ist fast ebenso verschlafen wie Tha Kaek oder Savanahket jedoch gibt es einige nette Restaurants und Guesthaeuser und zwei riesen Maerkte mit Essen und allerlei Kram. In Pakse haben wir unss fuer 3 Tage ein kleines Motorrad geliehen, mit dem wir auf Erkundungstour auf das oestlich liegende Berg-Plateau (nicht sehr hoch) machen wollten. Das Plateau bietet einige Wasserfaelle, verschlafene Doerfer und Cafe-Plantagen, von denen die Bohnen fuer den beruehmten Lao Cafe gewonnen werden (der uebrigends super schmeckt und mit gesuesster Kondensmilch serviert wird). Die Tour mit dem Motorrad war fantastisch und mit dem eigenen Fortbewegungsmittel unterm Hintern waren wir wesentllich flexibler dahin zu gelangen, wo wir wollten und nicht nur dahin, wo der oeffentliche Bus hin will. Die erste Nacht haben wir in Tad Lo verbracht - was fuer seine naheliegenden Wasserfaelle bekannt ist. Wir fanden dort ein schoenes Guesthouse und den Abend verbrachten wir mit der Guesthouse-Familie und den anderen Gaesten am Grill, auf dem traditionsgemaess fuer diese Gegend eine Ziege (oder deren unidentifizierbaren Einzelteile) gegrillt
wurde. Der Abend wurde sehr lustig mit Guitarren-Livemusik, Bambus-Pfeife rauchen und Lao Bier trinken.
Am naechsten Tag ging es weiter mit unserem Rundtrip auf dem Plateau. Die Landschaft war fantastisch und wir haben uns auf einen Spaziergang in eines der abgelegenen Doerfer getraut. Innerhalb einer Minute hatten wir alle Kinder des Dorfes im Schlepptau (und das waren viele fuer das kleine Dorf, wenn man bedenkt, das die Landbevoelkerung von Laos keine Ahnung von Familienplanung hat). In den Augen der Kinder stand eine ungehaeure Neugier und gleichzeitig grosse Skepsis uns gegenueber. Bevor wir uns verabschiedeten hat Martin noch die aelteste (oder nur groesste?) in der Gruppe gefragt, ob wir ein Photo machen duerften. Sobald er die Kamera aus der Tasche gezogen hat, hatten sich die Kids schon dicht gedraent fuer den Schnappschuss bereit gestellt (den Ihr uebrigends im Anhang anschauen koennt). Darauf hatten sie wohl die ganze Zeit gewartet! Den Tag haben wir dann in Chamapsak abgeschlossen da wir hier frueh am naechsten Morgen die Ruinen des Wat Phu anschauen wollten um dann anschliessend zurueck nach Pakse zu duesen. Um nach Champasak zu gelangen muss man mit der Faehre den Mekong ueberqueren - oder besser gesagt der Lao-Version einer Faehre.

Tat Soung - the most impressive waterfall - not much water though.... Mal wieder ein Abenteuer fuer sich - schaut Euch die Photos an. Anyway - der Abend auf der Veranda auf den Mekong mit Sonnenuntergang war wunderbar und die Ruinen des Wat Phu war das fruehe Aufstehen allemal wert, da es um 7 Uhr morgens noch schoen kuehl und das Licht zum photographieren grandios war.
Die naechste Station sollte Don Det sein. Don Det ist eine der 4000 kleinen Inseln im Mekong - ganz im Sueden von Laos im Grenzgebiet zu Kambodscha. Nachdem wir gegen Mittag unser Motorrad zurueckgegben hatten kamen wir noch am selben Tag speat am Nachmittag auf Don Det mit Bus und Boot an. Leider waren wir schon so spaet drann, dass die allermeisten Bungalows schon voll waren. So mussten wir die erste Nacht in einer staubigen Moskito-Huette verbingen. Am naechsten morgen haben wir uns dann sofort eine neue Bleibe gesucht sobald das erste Boot mit einer Handvoll Traveller die Insel verlassen hat. Wenn man mit dem Longboat hier mal angekommen ist kann man nicht wirklich viel machen auf Don Det ausser in der Haengematte am Mekong-Ufer liegen und sich ein Radl leihen und ueber die Insel und die Nachbarinsel Don Kon cruisen, die mit einer Bruecke

....but what a view! miteinander verbunden sind. Genau das haben wir getan und nebenbei noch das gute Essen und die leckeren Frucht-Shakes unserer Guesthouse 'Mama' genossen - eine wirklich amuesante Dame mittleren Alters, die permanent auf Lao (98%) und English (2%) auf dich einredet und sich noch dazu nach jedem Satz kaputtlacht (und keiner weiss warum). Wer auch immer nach Don Det faehrt sollte im Mama Say Guesthouse wohnen und eine Menge Spass haben. Heute nachmittag sind wir wieder in Pakse gelandet und morgen frueh werden wir von hier nach Kambodscha fliegen, wo wir unsere letzten 6 Tage unserer reise verbringen werden.
