The New Year in Japan meant celebrations galore and new opportunities to experience Japanese culture for Jessie and me. Our friends here in Minami-Alps City treated us to experiences including searching out local monkeys and visiting the Mt. Fuji area. One question we’re asked here quite a bit is, “Is Japanese winter cold for you?” We try not to laugh, but say, no, it is not too cold. In fact, it’s been in the 40s and 50s here for a high most of the winter, and although the coldest is yet to come, we’re not too concerned. We miss a lot of things about home, but slick roads and frozen extremities are not among them. And, surprisingly, you get used to the kerosene heater smell pretty fast. Road trip to Fuji 5 Lakes

Between Christmas and New Year, my family along with Mario and I went to Fujigoko (Fuji Five Lakes) region for 3 days. Mt Fuji was hiding more than I would have liked, but it was a great trip nonetheless. We went to Fuji-Q Highland Roller Coaster Park and mum went on the scariest record breaking Eejanaika coaster! So brave, even if her eyes were closed the whole way haha! We also went ice skating and Mario showed off some talent! On our second day went to Fuji Safari Park. The whole drive there, we couldn't see more than a few metres in front of us due to thick fog, but literally one minute before we arrived, we turned a corner and the fog magically disappeared!! Hakone and Fuji Five Lakes (Fujigoko) This is going to be a bit of a Mt Fuji marathon, so if you find it boring, please trust me that the beautiful breathtaking mountain is one of the reasons why I love living in Japan. Understand that it is much more spectacular in real life but I hope some of the photos capture its grandeur! It Could Have Been Worse Forgetting my money and camera was not a good start to our overnight road trip. Not to worry as worse things could have happened - I could have been killed by volcanic gasses, stranded on a road in an earthquake, witnessed the eruption of Mt Fuji or gobbled up by the gurgling of the hot spring bath!
