Karrie Yukon invited Elaine and William to go with her to Japan because she wanted to visit her brother Pat Mahoney, who is working in Japan as a civilian employee of the U.S. Department of Defense. Her husband Emmet couldn't join her for various reasons, and Karrie didn't want to go by herself. Elaine volunteered to go, and William was ready to go too.
