Konnichiwa!!! FINALLY!!! I have started my blog like I promised!!! Now instead of me writing the same thing 100 times or sending out a mass email (because I know everyone loves those impersonal things), I have this blog where I can update everyone on what is going on in Japan. I have been here officially for a month. It seems like forever and yet not so long at the same time. I start teaching this week. All of August the students are on break, yet I still have to go to school and sit there...doing nothing. I have also had many orientations on living in Japan (ie how to avoid cockroaches and tatami bugs) and I got to connect with many of th 130 JETs in Hiroshima Ken. There have also been some interesting differences in ... read more

Konnichi wa! Brent & I are safely in Japan as you can see. The flight was looooong. But there was plenty of things to keep ourselves occupied. We got into of things to keep ourselves occupied. We took the Narrita Express train from the Airport to Tokyo. Then made our way to another series of trains to our final destination late last night. As Brent puts it "we were on a bunch of conveyor belts". I take my hat off to Brent-san. He spits hot fire when he needs to...meaning his Japanese is strong and he got us were we were supposed to go. All in all we traveled straight for almost a clean 24 hours. We got a solid night of sleep. We are going to be in and around Tokyo today just straight chilling ... read more

Once again we slept in because the boys were out playing hard until very early in the morning. We went over to Wendy's for a late breakfast and discussed the night before. I was halfway through a frenchfry when J asked E, "So what was the deal with you and the dance fight?". I almost choked on my fry...."What dance fight?" I asked, eyes wide open with curiousity. Apparently at some point during the night, E (who is not afraid to get out and dance, one of the things I love about him), was dancing with a girl at a club. She was there with more than one person and I guess someone didn't like her dancing with him and they came up and started dancing up in E's face. He did some moves and then ... read more

After our mishaps at Mt Fuji, we all slept in pretty late the next day. We decided to use the train to get out and see some sites before taking off the next day for home. We walked around in the Shinjuku area in the morning because they have a street fair that happens on Sundays. It was really cool. The crowd would go from being people in business suits to girls with pink hair and platform shoes to ladies in kimono. We watched some people doing brazilian street dancing, then some other guys doing robot hiphop dancing and finally a little magic show. We decided to get some food at a local shop that lets you cook yakisoba at your table. It was really good. After we finished eating, we headed to the station so ... read more

We headed out early on our second day in Tokyo for the buses to Mt Fuji. We grabbed some food before getting on the bus and settled in for the 2 1/2 hour drive. We didn't hit much traffic and got up there pretty fast. We bought a walking stick to take up the mountain and get stamped at the stations. I definitely recommend you take off the bell and ribbons/flag and store them before you start. The bell will drive you nuts by the time you are done and the ribbons will bleed all over your hands and the stick from using it. I had been told to do this and am grateful that I remembered when we purchased our stick. Our bus dropped us off at the 5th station so we were starting a ... read more

We booked our flight and hotel for our 4 day trip to Tokyo through HIS. We were traveling with a friend. All three of us were getting ready to move away from the area and wanted to get at least a small trip to Tokyo in. Our flight from southern Japan was rather quick and we arrived in Tokyo at Haneda around midday. We decided to take the train from the airport to the station nearest our hotel which was the Shinjuku Washington Hotel in the Shinjuku district. The train was actually pretty easy to figure out. We had downloaded an English version of the map before leaving home, and being that we already lived in southern Japan, we had plenty of yen handy. While we were in the station, we laid on the arrangements for ... read more

Due to a fortunate happenstance I gained another chance to visit Japan through my job in Sydney. This was an unexpected but pleasant surprise as I settled back into Sydney life after spending two years overseas. I was lucky to get a job in an oil exploration company thanks to a friend, and it was a great feeling to get back on my feet financially after my travels. Life certainly takes many interesting twists and turns as the years roll by. My job in the company, dear reader, started in the print room but the manager asked if I would consider a job as a Technical Assistant, despite the fact I didn't possess a science background unlike the rest of my colleagues. I was offered the position which involved assisting the geologists and geophysicists in their ... read more

Shinjuku station is in the heart of downtown Tokyo, and the busiest train station in the world. Up until my arrival there I thought I was doing OK, having farewelled my friends in San Francisco and boarded a flight to Japan before arriving at Tokyo's Narita airport. From there I caught the airport train to Shinjuku and was nervous alright, but arriving at the station really freaked me out. There are several floors, train lines in every direction and more people rushing around than I'd ever seen in my life. For a time I just stood at the station paralysed with inaction and feeling completely overwhelmed. But things tend to work out and with some assistance I eventually found the correct line to get to my gaijin (foreigner) house. I arrived safely, and this journal tells ... read more
