We spent a couple days in Wellington. Our first day included a walk around the city then booking in at our special hostel (booked by mistake as it’s not really meant to have children but it was right in Courtney Place). Our next day was a full day LOTR movie tour with too many sites to name – but here are a couple – Mina Tirith, Isengard, the Hutt River filing location, the Rivendell main filming location (partly recreated), and Mount Victoria where multiple Shire locations were filmed. I also walked up to a Maori Pa. Our last stop was the Weta Studios where we got a short tour. The next day we visited the Te Papa museum, then drove around the Miramar peninsula and visited Scott’s College. We followed the western coast road north stopping ... read more

----- Figured out the issue with pictures and have posted a few --- Hello all, or should I say Konichiwa! I'm in Japan and am now just finding the time to update you on my travels. Having issues with my browser so hopefully this will work out. Arrived in Tokyo and it's been a 'hit the ground running' type of trip. I'm already in Kyoto but this post will be only Tokyo and surrounding areas. I'll update you on Kyoto in a couple of days, don't want to take up all your time in one post. Now, on to the good stuff... Spent my first full day in Tokyo seeing two little areas, one called Asakusa and the other, Ueno. The tourist office offers 1.5 hour free walking tours of the areas so I thought, no ... read more

Please see the entry from the day before on 20 Sep 2014 that describes this in a bit more detail. This entry is just for the few photos I took while as part of one of the two live tuna auction observer groups. Much of these photos are showing the bidders inspecting the two different lots of Tuna that were being auctioned that morning.... read more

Tsukiji Fish Market Early morning, rise and shine! Following my obsession with all things food and food related, I got out of bed this morning at 6:30 and went to the Tsukiji Fish Market. If it comes out of the water, it is for sale here. It is more of a gigantic wholesale market machine. And incredibly amazing. I started with a sushi breakfast at one of the many tiny sushi restaurants in the small market area. Since the fish comes right from the market, you can't get it more fresh. By far the best sushi I have ever had. The flavors! Then I ventured into the wholesale area. It is hard to describe so I have put in many photos in the hopes to give an idea of the energy and vibe that is there. ... read more

Saturday-Day Eight Tokyo for the day and sailing to Nagasaki on the Pacific Ocean We arrived in Tokyo this morning at 6am so regretfully had to set the alarm this morning to make the most of the day ashore as we had to aboard by 4pm and sailing by 4-30pm. The port of Tokyo put on information tents with maps & free shuttle buses to take us from Oi Futo (wharf) to Shinagawa train station. This is a major station and an interchange for at least 4 lines. It is light rail above ground, not the subway. So we blundered into this, found ticket machines by watching other people, looked above the machines at an English map, found Tokyo, worked out how to buy tickets, which train line to take and jumped on board ... read more

Fish, fish and more fish...We decided to go see what everyone was talking about. Tsukiji Fish Market is the largest seafood market in the world! We were told in order to get in to see the tuna auction we would have to get up at 3:30 to be there by four am. It begins at 5 am sharp and they only let in the first 140 people in line. They let 70 in at 5-5:40 am and the second half of 70 people from 5:40-6:15 am. I was told that they have cut down the amount of people watching the auction because it raises the temperature in the auction hall and that is not good for the tuna. While this market seemed enormous to me it has been rumoured that it will be moving to a ... read more

It was an early start to our Japan holiday, by 5.45am we were making our way to Heathrow with potentially London's worst driver. Nearly side swiped three other vehicles and hit the curb. After a Bloody Mary in the lounge, always a fine way to kick start the day, we were off. The journey was rather good; a couple of movies and good 4hr sleep and we touched down at Haneda Airport around 4.30am. It was a breeze getting the bags, customs and then a monorail later we were walking along the quiet streets to our hotel. We were staying in Ginza around 20 floors up and our first view was the sun rising over Tokyo Tower. We couldn't check in for a while so after freshening up we headed out to the newest and biggest ... read more

Its been a year almost that we have been trying to get all newly introduced approvals etc for our travel from office. Finally in Sept Ajay succeeded in getting it and we were on.It was approved for me & Siddharth for a week long travel to Tokyo & Singapore respectively.I decided on week of 8th Oct but while arranging the logistics,it came across that all hotels in Tokyo are fully booked due to a IMF Annual event in that week in Tokyo.Plus Monday was a Tokyo off.Given these 2 issues, i was forced to push my dates to a week after. With so many travel experiences behind us, preparing for Tokyo was least of my concerns. My focus was on my agenda as this was my first abroad visit after becoming VP earlier this year.I was visiting there ... read more
