Aussie! Aussie! Aussie! Oi! Oi! Oi! World Cup - Australia v Japan
What a fantastic victory and a fantastic night!
Still on a high (and sleep deprived) from our weekend in Tokyo, we put on our colours and showed Japan some Australian spirit...and also a bit of leg!
The bus ride to the city was funny, I was still getting ready as I only finished tuition lessons 20 minutes before we had to get on the bus. The only person that sat even a little bit close to us, couldn't stop turning his head - he looked very scared!
Walking through the city before the game wasn't even half as fun as walking through after. Before, people just thought we were freaks! A few Japanese we spoke to didn't even realise that green and gold were Australia's sporting colours! We did have two massive flags, however, so I'm sure they would have worked it out!
We arrived at Our Boozer as early as possible to reserve the best seats in the house. We ordered some food, had a couple

beers and waited for all the other Aussies to show...but no Aussies came, except for one guy from Sydney, Leigh and another older crazy guy who happened to be in the toilet for our first goal!
All the rest were Japanese, American and Kiwis. Anyway there's nothing wrong with standing out, and that, we certainly did, Aussie flag tattoos and all!
I never could have imagined being so nervous watching the game, it was so exciting. Obviously the Japanese went crazy when they scored in the first half. I was also a little worried because before the game the pub owner called out over the microphone asking people not to jump. I’m not sure if it was because the place might collapse (as it is on the second floor) or because of the noise it would make in the bar underneath. Either way, I prayed that they would not score again!
We were right on the edge of our seats till the very last ten minutes, and then 3 fantastic goals! We were so excited and it was so funny getting up and cheering loudly when all the Japanese were silent and their heads bowed in their
hands - we didn’t care!
We pretty much left straight after the match because they were interviewing the Japanese team (on TV) and we couldn’t understand it anyway - all the commentary was in Japanese throughout the game too! We went to the main road and intersection (which I call our Shibuya - you’ll see Shibuya in the Tokyo pics - huge intersection and crosswalk with screens etc). There were a lot of sad Japanese, but many at the same time still friendly and congratulating us! There were a few who probably thought it would be impossible for some loud Aussies to be all dressed up carrying on, cheering in their city - they were the ones we got the finger from or their cigarette thrown at us!
Leigh, the other Aussie came walking with us after the game and I couldn’t count how many times we chanted Aussie! Aussie! Aussie! We even attracted some Japanese groupies who followed us around for a while - they loved it!
It was like we were famous, three different groups of people from TV stations videoed and interviewed us! The third lot that videoed us were so excited to have
found us! We were just walking down one of the malls and they pulled up and called out of the window “Are you from Australia?” - Duh!!!! So they brought all their video equipment out of their van and interviewed us - mostly in Japanese!!! They shined a huge light on us as we struggled to understand what they were asking. We just threw back any bits of Japanese we knew and again, performed our chant! **Today we just found out that we were on the evening news last night as some of the parents from kindy saw us! Haha!**
When we thought the Japanese had had enough of us circling their streets, we finally went home to remember this night forever...and to hang our flag off our balcony!
