Scuba Diving - Chibishi Islands Chibishi Island is part of the Kerama Islands located to the west of southern Okinawa. It took about 45 minutes by boat to get there, and my 2 dives there were very fun. For my specialty dives in the open water course I did a boat dive, underwater photography, and fish identification. The boat dive was easy, and I was able to practice rolling off the side of the boat for the first time. Some people in the open water class were nervous about doing it and althought I felt somewhat bad for them because they were having mini panic attacks, they were really funny at the same time. This one woman took nearly 8 minutes to get on her fins and work up the courage to roll backwards. She was ... read more

Scuba - Advanced Open Water Course I've began to take my advanced open water class for scuba this weekend. After passing the course, I'll be more familiar with underwater navigation, I'll be able to dive to deeper depths, I'll be more familiar with boat dives, recognize more marine life, learn about underwater photography, etc...overall, just improve upon the skills I already have. Friday evening was a night dive and I saw a few cool things. First off, when it's night time the fish are much more calm. When you shine your light on them, they either freeze or swim right at you. One puffer fish got so excited about someones light, he crashed right into it face first. Haha. Fish are so dumb. At night the sea anenome in the water sting and paralyse their prey, ... read more

A Habu's Repayment of A Kindness (A Story from Kunigami, Okinawa Island) Long ago, they used to produce a hand-made Tofu, bean curd, with seawater. One day a peasant woman went to the beach to fetch some seawater in her bucket. As she made her way home, with the bucket full of water balanced on her head, she heard a strange sound close by. It came from a nearby bush and sounded just like dried leaves burning. She wondered what it was, and after looking more closely, discovered smoke and flames rising from burning Adan leaves. "Fire! It must be put out immediately before it spreads and becomes a big fire." She dashed towards the flames carrying her brimming bucket of seawater. There she found a huge Habu, deadliest snake, curled up inside the fire. It ... read more

Is the evil blowfish - also known as puffer, globefish, or swellfish - in danger of extinction? In Japan, eating the honorable fugu (blowfish) is the ideal of gourmet dining-and the cooking version of Russian roulette. According to Japan Economic newswire, a Japanese wholesaler exported the first 90 kg of vacuum-packed fugu to Hong Kong in October 1995. Hong Kong is the second market to import fugu from Japan. New York, which started importing the fish in 1989, currently sells about 1 tons of fugu every year, according to the wholesaler. Fugu's trade volume is rising because of people's curiosity in eating such fish. In Japanese, the word fugu is a general name for fish of the family Tetraodontidae, class Osteichthyes, order Tetraodontiformes, but it is also used more broadly, like the English word globefish, to ... read more

Scuba Diving - Maeda Flats, Maeda Point, Devil's Cove This past weekend I did three dives on Saturday. The first place I went was Maeda Flats. It took a long time to get out to where the reef dropped off. I walked for about a quarter of a mile in waist deep water until it finally got deep. I would recommend this site for family's looking to snorkle. There is small beach and some fish not far off the beach. The water was also very calm here compared to the other dive sites where it was really rough. For scuba diving: there weren't many fish, it took a while to actually get to the dive site, but the coral was fun to swim around in. The second dive site was Maeda Point. The water was extremely ... read more

Heiwa-Dori Heiwa-Dori (meaning "Peace Street") and Ichiba-hon Dori are two narrow, covered pedestrian streets that branch off from Kokusai Street. Robin and I decided to bike from Camp Kinser down to these streets to do a bit of exploring for the afternoon. Unfortunately for us, the weather didn't want to cooperate with our plans. Right as we arrived at Kokusai Street, it started to pour. Because we were soaking wet by the time we arrived, we decided to continue on our trip. The Okinawans who were protected from the rain by overhangs looked at the two of us as if we were crazy. Then again, we were the only ones out in the rain so I suppose it was an odd site. Kokusai Street was shut down to traffic for the afternoon so we slowly biked ... read more

Scuba Diving - Bolo Point Bolo Point was a great place to scuba dive. I was able to see 2 reef sharks. At one point, one swam right in front of me about 15 feet away. One of the sharks was around 3.5 to 4 feet and the one that swam in front of me was about 5 feet long. They were circling around one area and then swam away when my dive buddy and I approached. Apparently near Bolo Point there are some caves about 100 feet below the surface where it's sandy on the bottom and the sharks like to rest. It was pretty awesome to see sharks that close but I don't think I'd want to mess around with them. Watching them swim around was pretty amazing. They looked like they weren't even ... read more

Sushi-Go-Round Within Chatan Town there is a section called Mihama, and located inside Mihama is American Village. American Village offers a few shops and restaurants that are like those in the United States but also has several stores featuring Japanese culture and cusinine. This evening a friend and I decided to avoid the Americanized places and check out a sushi-go-round. At kaiten-zushi (conveyor-belt sushi or sushi-go-round) restaurants, small plates of sushi move past customers’ tables on a conveyor belt, and customers take the ones they want to eat. At a kaiten-zushi restaurant, each plate usually ranges from about ¥100 (less than $1) to ¥500 (about $4), while in a traditional sushi restaurant you must spend at least ¥1,000 ($8) just for a set menu and much more if you order a la carte. Sushi-go-rounds are ... read more

Japanese Beverages (3) 1.) Cream Soda - This is the greatest drink I've had since coming here. It's 7-Up with melon syrup and a scoop of vanilla ice cream places on top. It's a drink that I always get for dessert when I go out to restaurants now. Wow! I like to mix the ice cream into the soda and then drink it. If you do this BE VERY CAREFUL! If you try to stir it in too fast, the ice cream and soda will start fizzing like crazy and you'll soon have a mess on your countertop. Finish off the drink with a cherry on top. 2.) Tea - Served cold. Every single vending machine in Okinawa sells tea, and there are tons of different brands. This brand was just tasted like plain tea but ... read more
