Sunday Her flight was due to land at 16:20, so my landlady told me to come down to her cafe for 15:50 and if she wasn't busy she'd take me, otherwise she'd call a taxi for me. So I did some final tidying and my landlady called me around 15:30 to say she was free to take me to the airport. So I went downstairs and she drove me the 10-15 minutes and dropped me off. I had quite a bit of time to kill, so I ended up sitting on a seat reading one of the books that Nina had left. Eventually Sakko arrived, and we went to the Toyota desk to pick up the rental car she'd arranged. It was a bit of a drive away so we jumped into a van with some ... read more

I've been taken out by various people while I've been here - the school when I arrived, the English teachers as a goodbye-hello lunch for Nina and me, my landlady for the same reason, the English teacher at my second school, and 2 nice ladies who like to do Eikaiwa. I've also gone to several restaurants with Nina, who's been showing me around the area. The English teachers at my school There are 5 female teachers and 1 male. Everyone except the male teacher went to lunch, which I found out was because he's taking driving lessons. It's different over here - the courses are intense and only take a couple of weeks to complete before they take the test, which is done on a course instead of the actual streets. A lot of people don't ... read more

Settling in to my new town My God, it's hot here!!! The first thing I noticed literally as I stepped off of the plane was the intense heat! But excited all the same, especially as all we could see out of the window as we landed was just lots of greenery. Mmmm.... The airport, unsurprisingly, is not that big and therefore it didn't take long for our bags to come out on the belt. I managed to get my broken black trolley bag and headed out to the exit. There were lots of signs with the names of the new JETs that were arriving, and a welcome "committee" for each person. As soon as I walked out, someone addressed me as "Satsuki", and I found out he was the head of the Board of Education in ... read more

The first trip away for the summer break was to Shikoku, an island kind of south west from where I'm living, and 6 hours away by bus... Yuko (my room mate) and I headed off 3 hours after my last exam, on July 12, to stay in Kochi, where her parents are living at the moment, and near where she grew up in Ehime, for 4 nights. Yuko's mum and dad are absolutely gorgeous people. Arriving at their house I instantly felt a part of the family- welcome to help myself to the fridge and lounge around the house in my PJs, and chatting to them like we already knew each other well. The next day the four of us travelled around the most part of the Eastern side of Shikoku. SO handy to have a ... read more

its 12 days and 234km since my last blog. sounds like a long way but in fact i continued to battle with my feet and was thus slower than i hoped. but the good news is that my blisters and i have finally come to an understanding; i smother them with antiseptic several times a day and they only give me bother after six or seven hours on the road. you find me in kochi. im having a day off to appreciate its original castle, kochi jo, and to stock up on plasters and other goodies like sellotape to mend my collapsing map book, and a vest and shorts for these long coastal stretches. not being a henro for the day is quite refreshing. i think its the first time ive actually stopped, reflected and felt ... read more

Every year since 1954 the city of Kochi holds a four day dance festival from August 9 ~ 12 called Yosakoi. If you translate Yosakoi into English it means “Come at Night” or “Come Tonight” (Yo=night Sa=at Koi=come). The festival was first held as a means to uplift the downtrodden spirits of the citizens during an economic recession. The City Management in the 1950s sound like interesting and fun loving people to me. Yosakoi dancing is unusual and often described as a modern rendition of Awa dancing, but I fail to see any great similarities. In the past decade or so the Yosakoi style has grown in popularity and festivals are now held in Tokyo, Sapporo and other cities. Yosakoi dance teams have a great amount of liberty in their routines and perhaps this freedom of ... read more

Well if I was not hot enough from the onsen of Dogo, it certainly paid off in the next few days! I spent yesterday morning seeing Matsuyama castle, and the tranquil park of Dogo kooen, where I was amongst the like minded taking photos of lillies and beautifully tamed bonsai. The local folk come here for relaxing, reading sleeping, contemplating, and a bit of romance, or so it seems! The odd vagrant also appeared beneath a newspaper and dishevelled clothing, but then again that could be me compared to the TORENDI japanese....I digress... The streetcars of Matsuyama make getting around a breeze.....so I learnt. For 300 yen you can go anywhere for one day from dawn until 10pm, taking you in the general direction of every tour group known to visit this place. Creating your own itinerary ... read more

There are few other things that beat a solid road trip with good friends. Especially, a road trip to a beach with good breaks and a van filled to its limits with surfing and camping gear. This weekend I escaped the confines of the islands after nearly a month of not stepping foot on the mainland. It is always a strange feeling to leave this area after I haven’t been away from it for a while. I get so used to the laidback lifestyle and the normal chill routines that the islands provide that the city almost always makes me take a step back. Back home road trips and hanging around with groups of friends is so commonplace for me, however, in Japan it is rare that I have the chance to do this, besides with ... read more

When I awoke the electricity was still off. Confused, I called the desk and learned the following; there is a switch just inside the door labeled MS, the switch controls current in the room, I hit the switch by mistake when I entered the room last night and tried to turn on the lights, and I really didn’t need the lights at all. My New Zealand Hotel had a similar system. I had to insert my room key in a slot to get power. They are interesting power saving techniques that we may see in newer hotels here at home. This should have given me a clue as to how the day would progress. I took the shuttle to downtown and planned to meander around. As you all know I am not a great shopper ... read more
