Mr and Mrs G decided that as HB was “unwell” that it would be better to go back to Tokyo a day earlier than planned. Mrs G told me later that HB had miraculously got better as soon as they had decided to go back, although HB didn’t know that. No - she was never sick to begin with, she had dry skin. Secretly I think that they were trying to get out of staying in a Buddhist temple for the night. The schedule that they would have had to do would have been gruelling; it also would have been freezing with all the snow around as I am pretty sure that there wouldn’t have been any heating. Again it was a slower start to the day; it would have been even more relaxed if I ... read more

This day was certainly a very different day from what was planned. Most of it was totally unnecessary, as my mum would say a good smack could have done the trick (but we don’t hit children, or at least you don’t hit other people’s children no matter how much you think the little darlings would benefit from one - let’s not open the smacking debate, we will leave it at my parents certainly gave me a good hiding in my time and it did me no harm, in fact I still get a smack round the back of the head from my mum and aunt, obviously now it is done in good fun with all of us laughing). Anyway that is jumping way ahead. Again this day was billed as a quiet day with nothing much ... read more

UntitledJoel Schroeder I got up really early and hit the cave bath again. Perfect way to start the day. I shot some footage of the view from my room, and took some photos of the room. I had slept surprisingly well on the mattress. We met up for a traditional Japanese breakfast at the hotel, in a great room overlooking the bay. You could see the fishing village below, the bay and out to the ocean. It was beautiful. Our hostess and her daughter, Yuka, served us a crazy amount of food for breakfast, and pretty much all of it was food you would never really crave for breakfast. I even made my own tofu, which was decent. Sadly, we had to check out and head back to Kanazawa and Yamanaka. It was about a 2 ... read more

Today was our first shoot day. We started off with breakfast at the hotel, then made a quick stop at the Kayotei Inn, a Japanese traditional style inn that Jiro, one of our guides, manages. We stopped there to use their wireless internet. We would have stayed there overnight the night before, but they are just finishing up some renovations, so it wasn't quite ready for us. The inn was beautiful though, and the traditional Japanese hospitality was amazing. We were there just long enough to check e-mail though, and then we moved on to the shop of a guy who does lacquerware design and art. He showed us a few pieces he was working on, and they were pretty amazing. His cheapest pieces are in the hundreds of dollars. There were items for over $100,000. ... read more

9am - So, 30 hours before I'm supposed to touch down in Tokyo, a 6.9 magnitude earthquake struck in Japan, the epicenter just off the coast of a city I'll be visiting in just 5 days or so. Andy is already there on a different trip, although in Kobe, so I don't know how much he felt the quake, and I think Hummel may have arrived to Japan on vacation just hours before the quake hit. I don't know that for sure yet, and I'm also not positive of the exact epicenter of the quake. Here's the story so far: http://www.cnn.com/2007/WORLD/asiapcf/03/24/quake.japan.ap/index.html 11:33am - Since I'm flying business on an international American Airlines flight, I get to spend my time at LAX in their executive lounge or whatever they call it. Lynne will be disappointed that I ... read more
