Oct 14 and 15, Held in Tenmangu Shrine abt.50km westward of Kobe (Also westward of Osaka) Japan. Although I checked it with Wikipedia, blogs and the related websites, I came to a question which date 14th or 15th is the most attractive one to me. It seemed it might take more than three hours to reach at the "Far West" from my house at Nara city "Far East". I took a train to Osaka station, transited for Himeji known as Himeji castle (World Heritage), arrived at Akashi Station where I changed to another line to Shirahama-no-Miya Station where the festival is held for two days. Without knowledge where it is, I followed to some would-be sightseeners. Before arriving the real site, several food stalls along street were seen within 10 minute walk. Already local people and ... read more

The five-days holidays came just at the right timing when my two close friends Jane and Cindy visited from Vancouver. It was a funny feeling seeing them in Japan at first. I've done and seen so much since arrival in this country to the point that my brain often fail to connect the amount of events happened with this short span of time. And my two friends constantly remind me that I've only been away from home for one month and a half. The holidays were grand. Went to the maddest Danjiri Matsuri in Japan, Kobe for the best beef on earth, and Kinosaki Onsen, which was pure heaven! My photos are arranged in the order of events. Kinosaki onsen, Kishiwada festival, and Kobe beef. Kinosaki onsen town is a very peaceful town in Hyogo-ken almost ... read more

After being folded up on airplanes for 23 hours, we enjoyed a nice walk with Ted and Nobu in the neighborhood where we visited a local noodle shop for dinner. It was wonderful. We were even able to walk after sitting on little pillows at a table not more than 12 inches from the floor! Today we went to Kobe to visit Ted's Kappore Dancing group - what a beautiful and graceful artform. They will be performing October 8 at Bunraku Stage in Nipponbashi. Ted is the first westerner to perform Kappore with this group! After the dancing lesson, we had lunch with the ladies! Wow. Octopus, Sake, Beer. . . again we survived to enjoy another adventure! Tonight a visit with the Shakudo family and an opportunity to meet the new baby! Can't wait to ... read more

He poked a tube down my nose and throat. The screen in front of me displayed some moving respiratory system images. Realizing those were from my own body, and with the itchy feeling caused by the tube, I refrained myself from sneezing or puking in front of the doctor, nurses, and my JTE. I felt sick on Wednesday, and had completely lost my voice on the second day. So here I was in a clinic in Japan doing endoscopy. "See? Your nasal cavity is intact, but your vocal cord is very red. Try to say 'yeah'", the doctor said. So I tried, the two flaps of my vocal folds vibrated, but refused to close. Air leaking through. I could hardly make a sound. I went home that day with a pile of medicine and the helplessness ... read more

Who would've thought that getting on a boat to go explore Phang Nga, Thailand a year ago would help me score tickets to a sellout baseball game in Japan? Well, it did. On that trip I befriended a Japanese family, one of whom went to fair lengths to get hold of a couple of tickets to a Hanshin Tigers v Yomiuri Giants game at Koshien Stadium (the Tigers home ground) during the Golden Week holidays. (A side note: the origin of many of the larger department stores in Japan lies with the railway companies. Department stores were built alongside major stations, and given the name of said railway company.) Aside from securing a ticket in the first place, the Hanshin Tigers experience begins well before reaching Koshien. Walk through the Hanshin department store in Osaka (where ... read more

We scrambled through the busy train station grabbing coffees, pastries and bento boxes (kind of like take-away, a meal in a box..except they taste good!) then waited on the train station platform taking in the occasional woosh of air as the bullet trains whizzed by. Eventually one stopped, allowing us to board. We had lots of room to kick back in reclining seats, spread out and enjoy our food while traveling at speeds up to 300 km/h (186 mph) on our way to Himeji. Our final destination of the day was Hiroshima, but we decided to stop in Himeji, the halfway point of our journey, to see the famous Himeji Castle. Himeji Castle is one of Japan's "Three Famous Castles," and is the most visited castle in Japan. It serves as an execellent example of the ... read more

I apologize for the delay in this blog entry : 0 2/6/2009 So me and my friends Ukyun (Korean), Jennie (American), and Katsutoshi (Japanese) headed to Kobe in search of a new pillow for my bed...haha...well that was the primary reason I wanted to go to Ikea in Kobe and I also wanted to remind my self of the Ikea in Atlanta in which I use to frequent. We ended up taking the Hankyu line instead of the famous and expensive JR line. The trip there and back was around 1200 Yen converts to about $12.80. The train ride was smooth and we made it to the station without getting lost. There was free shuttle bus to Ikea waiting there just for us....and all the other people going to Ikea...haha...so we hoped on and took the ... read more

On my second day in Japan I headed out of the city to Himeji. However, for the entire hour's journey I didn't see a single patch of non-city, every single square inch was built up! Japan's population is over double that of the UK's, but I don't think they have double the space, so you can understand why it is so packed!. I think it also has something to do with the amount of inhospitable land full of mountains, people have to live in the flat parts. Himeji however was lovely, be it completely built up. The walk to its castle was a straight line from the station, which was easy enough. However, I was looking for a restaurant recomended in my guide book, so I scanned the streets for a sign saying "Me-n-me," forgetting that ... read more
