As English teachers employed by the Japanese government we were required to attend a 5-day Culture and Language Training program. In reality, it was a five day party, and I am really glad we were required to attend! From the 22nd to the 26th of August, 40 or so new English teachers were sent to the "Hiroshima International Plaza" in Saijo-shi, Hiroshima Prefecture. It was a lot of fun because we spent our mornings in Japanese classes (which were anything but stressful), and then we spent our afternoons doing "cultural activities," such as scavenger hunts. For the big scavenger hunt our bus dropped us off at this mall where we were to take pictures of various Japanese products. However, within the first 10 minutes of being there we had security after us and were basically ... read more

Today Lisa, Stacey and I took a trip to Miyajima....one of the three most scenic spots in all of Japan apparently. Unfortunately, my photos don't do this place any justice. We picked probably one of the busiest and hottest days to go...there was the summer's end firework display at night, which attractive thousands of people. The sun was burning hot as well....so we spent most of the day trying to find water and shade. Luckily it's not that far away, so I can return sometime soon. We met a bunch of other JETs there....gaijins stick together! Our group doubled with Casey, Jeff and Alexis.... read more

Since I've been here, I've been to three orientations....in Tokyo, Hiroshima city and Saijo. They're not very interesting to write about, since they mostly consisted of seminars for our jobs here...but I thought I would post some pics of the people that I've met during the evenings filled with parties! Actually, one evening in Saijo they had a karate demonstration. The kids were seriously amazing....and the cutest things in the world! When they finished we all played around together. ... read more

One of the most random nights I have had so far (but I am sure there will be many more to come) was when Stacey, Heather, and I were invited to an Izakaya ("all you can drink" establishment) by some Japanese guys. Since we were still relatively new to Hiroshima and its nightlife we decided to take them up on their offer. Well, it ended up being a lot of fun as we taught them our Canadian drinking games, and they taught us their Japanese drinking games. Not to be rude, but I liked ours better, their's did not involve enough drinking! Anyways, it was a great night... lots of laughs, and free drinking. Oh yeah, in Japan it is custom for whoever does the invite to pick up the bill! It was sweet... we ... read more

I went to a place called Onomichi today which is on the southern coast of Honshu the main island in Japan. It took me a good hour and a quarter to get there by the local train again, but it was actually good to see the rural Japan that was in between Hiroshima and Onomichi. I haven't seen much of that. Onomichi is only a small town and doesn't have much infrastructure set up for tourists, there is a very helpful map you can get just outside the station but thats about it. The main reason its a good place to visit is because it has lots of beautiful scenery and also has lots of temples and shrines. The map that I got has a specific route to take where you can see all the temples ... read more

Today I went to an island off the coast of Hiroshima called Miyajima. It took about an hour to get there by tram and ferry but it was another beautiful day and the scenery was fantastic so I didn’t mind. The island was once thought to be a very sacred place and so has a very famous shrine and torii gate, (which are always placed outside shrines), however because the shrine and the island itself was sacred the gate was built in the ocean just off the coast of the island, which is very rare and as a consequence has become very famous. I spent the whole day there walking around the island and it was such a beautiful place. It was full of tourists of course, as you would expect in the summer holidays, and ... read more

All righty, so the last couple of nights have been wonderful. There have been festivals everywhere and lots and lots of fireworks. And wow, they’re a 100 times better than the fireworks that we have in the states. Just incredible. They’re bigger, louder and much more complex that any I’ve ever seen. Some exploded into a heart shaped pattern. And others rained gold droplets like weeping willows from about a quarter of a mile high almost to the ground. They also had fireworks that released sets of lanterns with parachutes. I’ve never seen the likes of fireworks like that. And then they had fireworks that exploded into a big circle, then something within them exploded into a larger circle, then a bigger circle. I wish that I was a writer so I could describe these things ... read more

On August 6th, 1945, the world's first atomic bomb was detonated over Hiroshima, Japan. 60 years later, I was fortunate enough to attend the Peace Ceremonies, commerating the 60th anniversary of this tragic event. Early in the day, at 8:15 a.m. when the bomb was originally dropped, there was a formal ceremony held, in which many people attended, including Prime Minister Koizumi. Because of the early time (which I'm sure is a surprise to all of you who know me well, as you know what an early riser I can be!), and my ongoing orientation to the bus system (I had just arrived 3 days earlier!), I didn't attend. However, I did attend the lantern lighting ceremony in the evening. Lanterns were lit, and floated on the river to remember the dead. The events of the ... read more

I know, I know, I shouldn’t have called this entry that but I’ve heard it so many times since I’ve told people that I was coming to Hiroshima so I had to include it. OK I hope it works this time, I wrote an entry yesterday but for some reason when I tried to submit it there said there was an error and my entry was erased, I didn’t have time to write another one so I’m including it in today’s one. Hopefully I’ll be able to update this fairly regularly as I don’t want to be writing a whole weeks worth of experiences at one time, it would be too long! And I’m a poor backpacker in an expensive country, so time is money! I left my new hometown of Hakodate on Friday 5th Aug ... read more

August 6, 1945 the first atomic bomb was dropped on Hiroshima City. Right before I left for Japan there was a cover article in TIME magazine on the upcoming 60th anniversary the following week. I feel very fortunate that I got to be there for the event and witness it first hand. In the morning there was a serious ceremony where the government got up and spoke and there were survivors from the a-bomb dropping as well. Due to the time of the serious ceremony and not to forget to mention the whole thing in Japanese, I opted out of going to it. In addition, it was pretty damn hot and humid. The humidity I experienced later that day was enough. During the afternoon my English club met up wtih me. Kabe Senior High School made ... read more
