Tazawako, in the north of Honshu, was one of our favourite stops. We stayed in the superb youth hostel by Lake Tazawako where we ate the most incredible traditional Japanese food and found some great company. It was a very peaceful and tranquil place, with the most beautiful onsens you'll ever find.

We'd love to come back and experience this in winter!

Meeting Simi and Duncan WAS a giggle! what a sweet pair of adventurous travelers they are. Twice me met at the Lake Tazawako hostel, where the meals were beyond delicious. The hotsprings on the mountainside above the lake were our shared destination, the Nyuto Onsen.

Just returned from two week holiday in Japan. Total agree - Tazawa-ko also our favourite place. Grandmother who runs the hostel treated us like kings and fed us like sumos. Nyuto Onsen in deep winter snow...what a treat!
