Despite my ferocious planning of our trip, I know there are times when serendipity delivers the best experiences. Today was one such occasion and what a fabulous experience it was. We only heard about the Inuyama Castle Festival when chatting to another tourist in a queue at the airport. When we checked our itinerary we discovered we would be only an hour away the weekend it is held so this morning we took the train from Kyoto to Nagoya and on to Inuyama castle. We had a small mishap en route: we were briefly separated when train doors closed on us and I had to get off at the next station and backtrack to retrieve Danny! The festival was a something we will remember all our lives, with the colour and vitality that seems to be ... read more

Thanks to my time in Japan, I am perfectly ok with not bathing alone. It’s actually sorta lonely now. Onsen (温泉)is the name of the Japanese public baths and be for warned! They change the baths every once and a while so be sure you walk into the correct one. If you can’t read Kanji don’t fret my dears, they usually have it color coded and possibly in English as well. 女 - women's 男 - men's Also, sleeping on a futon is amazing!! It’s so cozy and fluffy and just enough cush but definitely bring your own pillow. Everyone looked at me funny and thought I was so weird walking through the airport and the city with pillow like a nut job dragging around a blanket or a body or something but no! Great. Idea. Monday was my last day trip from Kyoto and I was heading out to see another National Treasure castle at Inuyama. Apparently, it is the oldest standing castle in Japan. The other National Treasure castles are Hikone, Himeji (see previous blogs) and Matsumoto (see a future one, but not yet!). To get there I had to take 3 trains again, but I was glad that one of them was a shinkansen to Nagoya – the bullet trains are awesome. Eventually I arrived at Unuma station which is across the river from Inuyama. Again, there is a private railway that can get you closer, but it wasn’t far away and, as it turns out, it was a very nice walk. Crossing the bridge over the river gave a wonderful vista of the castle on the hill, and ... read more

Some consolation this morning. After checking at the bus station our lost hotel key was succesfully located at another bus station. Within 45 minutes it was returned to us and we gratefully received a refund of our £100 fine. An example of the time being meticulously noted in Japan; the bus returning out key was running 2 minutes late and a note was left to inform me! After the key delay we set off for Inuyama in the sunshine. We ate the remains of our bargain dinner for lunch (I'd discovered reduced stickers at the supermarket) and discovered the two items we thought to be pork escalopes were potato! Inuyama had a worn feel to it. There were a number of closed shops and tired looking buildings. It had similar wooden building to Tsumago and Magome. ... read more

(Blogged on the the 10th of December but posted on the 11th of December - Dates have been adjusted.) Today we moved to another area – Inuyama Yuen. I have a problem with planning our route. For the second time in our trip in two days, I mis-read our itinerary and we got off at the wrong station to get to our hostel. In the end, it worked out for the best since we visited all the places we wanted to go and more, as we trudged from one place to another. But God, we really clocked the miles today and I was getting very frustrated with myself. P was very patient – I don’t know how she managed it. We walked over 5 hours as we crised-crossed the neighbourhoods of Inuyama with P heaving all ... read more

After spending a couple of wonderful days in Kanazawa, I continued on my history themed trip and went to Inuyama to the famous Inuyama Castle. Inuyama Castle is a UNESCO world heritage site because it is the oldest wooden castle in all of Japan. When I went to Sapporo for the Yuki Matsui last year, I saw a reproduction of the castle in snow and when I was flipping through my pictures recently, it made me remember that I really wanted to see it before I left Japan for good. So after I had some problems finding a place to stay in Shirakawa-go, I decided to put Inuyama in my trip and I found a decent minshuku, or bed and breakfast really. I got in around 1:30, found my minshuku, which was ever so conveniently located ... read more
