thof may, after a nice stop here at Lake Toba we had set the alarm at 07am to check out and make our way to Bukit Lawang to see some orang utans. We had booked a collective taxi for 420.000 IDR. We thought a fast breakfast should be possible and while we were eating our pancake ( this seems to be the best alternative compared to bread ) the ferry arrived and started beeping as a sign of departure… It was only 07h45 and the ferry was supposed to leave 08am, we thought Indonesian time meant anything but too early! They will wait for us we thought and in 2 bites we ate our food (Jesper even left his so desired coffee of the day ) and hurried up with all our bags to the ferry laying in front of our lodge. A new adventure started!
We were supposed to leave 9am with the taxi, instead we were gonna leave 9h30 and in the end we left 9h50. We had one companion in the car, somebody from Malaysia, we were going to drop him in Berastagi. This took a good 3 hours. Here we stopped an hour and had some
lunch. The city of Berastagi didn’t look nice, but many people stop here a few days because of 2 volcanos that you can hike. Because of our flight to Kuala Lumpur on the 19
th we couldn’t overnight here. The rest of the trip we were alone in the car for which we bought an extra seat… That was more than welcome thinking about the long and uncomfy travel we had from Medan to Lake Toba and this was going to take 8hours!
18h30 we arrived in Bukit Lawang, a tiny village along the river in the jungle. It just started raining big time and we still had to walk 2km to our lodge (Sam’s bungalow) so on with the rain jackets and of we went accompanied by Mudhi and his friend, and a flash light ( by then it was dark). Mudhi and his friend work for the Indonesian tourism board and this is one of their duties, thank you guys! We arrived soaking wet at Sam’s ( one of the last places to stay at the river ) and after arranging the trek of the next day and some dinner ( Stef had some Gado Gado for the
second time today , this is a dish with peanut sauce , yummie, one of my favorites by now! ) we went off to dreamland while the rain kept on pouring down and the river swell and swell. In 2003 nearly 236 people died here because of flash flodding…
Next morning 9am Muhdi and friend were there and full of energy we started our 3 hour trek into the jungle and hopefully see some nice orang utans. First we crossed the river with a boat and then we had a very steep walk of 20 minutes and we were lucky, there they were all around us moving from branch to branch. I think we sat there 20 minutes looking at them and taking photos. A orang utan mama and baby came very close and stayed in our neighborhood all the time. There were a few males around but they stayed a bit further away as if they were watching out. A certain moment Skye fell and started to cry out and I think 4 orang utans we’re observing him for a while. We were wondering who was observing who?????!!!!
We continued the trekking and we saw more orang
utans and 1 peacock. All the other beast were hidden away, unfortunately.
Next stop was the restaurant of Muhdi’s mama where we filled the stomachs again ( for Stef Gado Gado was a must again)!! The rest of the day we rested and strolled around town. Kids being offered candy here and there and Ask had to pose once more for the camera!
