It has been almost a month since our wedding on September 5th, and the time has flown! The last guests left on September 15th, so we have been spending the last two weeks winding down from all the action and having a honeymoon in the Gili Islands off Lombok.
The wedding was actually a lot of fun. I had always thought that the bride and groom were not really supposed to enjoy the wedding, too busy being stressed, but I was pleasantly surprised.
After much research, we decided to have the wedding in the gardens of the Hyatt hotel followed by a reception at one of our favourite beachside restaurants.
The wedding was at 5pm, but we had some photos taken in the lush tropical grounds of the Hyatt beforehand. We had planned it to be just the two of us plus our dads as the photographers, but as the guests started to arrive and spotted us, they joined in on the photos and it became a mammoth photo session, with about 5 cameras pointed our way at any one time, and different people hopping in and out of the photos. It actually turned out really nice, and I don't
know why we didn't think to plan it like that in the first place! It also helped to calm any wedding jitters as we had already interacted with many of the guests before the ceremony.
The wedding went as well as to be expected in a country like Indonesia, although there were a few mishaps, which are the most interesting part for story-telling!
The main one was that the wedding music didn't play when I walked down the aisle with my dad. While we waited outside, I heard a loud screeching noise which quickly subsided, so assumed that the stereo had been too loud, but had been turned down a notch ready for us. When we walked in, with all eyes on us, I didn't even notice that there was no music as I was so nervous!!!
I also had a moment of stress when I tried my dress on the morning of the wedding. I had had it custom-made in Bangkok and hadn't had the shoes with me at the time as Scott's dad was bringing them out for me. I just told the tailor the heel height and she did the rest. Stupidly, I didn't try
on the whole outfit until the morning of the wedding and only then did I realize that the dress was about an inch too long! After a few crazy hours of wondering how I could make an insert to make my heels higher, I decided to just go with it, but ended up standing on tip-toes for many of the photos to make my dress hang right!
Another minor stress was when I arrived at the hairdressers for my appointment, and the guy I had had a trial run with, plus a reservation with, had the day off! When they saw the appointment card, they called him at home and he ran through the door, panting, after 10 minutes - phew!
In general, however, everything went smoothly. The ceremony was quite short and simple, about 20 minutes, after which we had some more photos before heading out to the reception.
On arrival, we had a cocktail and beer reception before sitting down to eat at 7pm. By then, I was really enjoying it instead of being stressed! I was sooo glad it had all gone fairly smoothly without too many hitches! I wasn't even phased when the
cake was delivered and we cut into it only to discover it was frozen!!! Oh well, it was Bali!!
